Have 02 VFR. Just changed thermostat, and fuel pressure regulator. Bike is running right and gas mileage has been fixed.

Well, when I started it up, I decided to mess with idle rpms. I barely touch the dial, and idle rockets to 4K. I shut the bike off, and when I restart it stays at 2, then drops to 1K and stays there. I want to raise it to 1200- 1500, and turning the knob does absolutely nothing.

    Any thoughts?

Are you sure that the knob is actually turning? Sometimes the knurled plastic ring around the cable can be dislodged. Did you try adjusting the idle with a Phillips head screwdriver instead?

Unless it is the knob it sounds like you could have an air leak.

Look for disconnected hose (vacuum) or cracked hose near the end of a hose.

    Agreed.

The thermostat replacement requires a lot of vac line disconnects, as well as the throttle body boots so make sure they're all back where they ought to be as well as the boots tightened appropriately (not overtightened - use the feeler gauge/cut flexible metal strips in the correct width).

But the bike is running fine, and fuel consumption is what it should be... can it still be a vacuum leak when everything is running fine?

You need to go with both directions of advise and inspect all that you have touched and the linkage just to remove all doubt from your mind and eliminate what you can for further trouble shooting.

Whats the best way to drain the tank by yourself without just dumping gas all over yourself?

I never succeeded in not dumping gas all over myself, no matter what method I tried, but that wouldn't surprise you if you knew me personally.

I'd try siphoning the tank out into a gas can so you can re use it. Preferably with a piece of equipment that generates the initial suction for you, as opposed to sucking on the tubing with your mouth.

    Amazon.com: SIPHON HOSE -- 6': Automotive
click link above, they have the siphon hose at auto zone for 6 bucks.
you just need to zip tie the end you put in the tank to a threaded rod or pc of wood so it goes all the way to the bottom of the tank.

    NO NO NO.

    Forget all that.

    Put on your rubber gloves.

Find the petcock. Turn the gas off. Now... remove the fuel line with the dry rag in hand to absorb the fuel that is in the hose.

Then put a piece of fuel line onto the petcock THEN turn on the petcock and let it drain into a gas can. AND DO NOT DO THIS RIGHT NEXT TO A GAS HOT WATER HEATER.

For systems with fuel pumps read your shop manual and jump the right terminals and pump into a gas can.

There isn't a petcock on the sixth gen.

Can't find the post from my phone but someone put a dry flow quick disconnect in the lines which helps a lot with tank removal in the future

That is WHY I added the last sentence.

Get a shop manual and it will show how t jump e fuel pump relay to empty the tank into a gas can.
Also think about disconnecting the fuel line. put a (helping hand) into the fuel line and
    just remove the entire tank.
Helping hand any auto parts store. HELP display.

You only adjust the idle when the engine is HOT. When it's cold, the starter valves are open and affecting the "cold" idle.
