I recently bought an 83 vf750f it's been to the shop twice in 2 months, now i'm told it has no compression in the #4 after it was backfiring out the right tail pipe. The bike has 15,000 mi on it norris cam's, and kerker pipes. Do I part it out, rebuild it, used engine?????????? Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That sucks. My money is on a valve issue and they are almost always pretty bad. You need to look into the failure to move on. If it has wadded a valve I would look for a new engine or a complete bike that runs but has been trashed, easy to find. Good luck.

leak down test to see what isn't sealing. As TOE said, probably valve.

can use a compression tester but plug in an air compressor air hose and listen to where the leakage is. Would think a shop worth it's salt would have taken 2 more minutes to figure it out and tell you what the problem is.

I live in san jose, ca. The shop told me that the #4 cylinder has no compression, and the # 2 cylinder has a cross threaded spark plug......... I just bought the bike 2 mnths ago, it seemed to run alright at the time, but started to backfire out the right tail pipe, then this. It had the cam's replaced with norris cams, kerker exhaust, etc. Where could I find a used engine at a reasonable price, or part it out.

Sounds like the previous owner didn't adjust the valves right after putting in the new cam and burned the exhaust valve on the #4 cylinder from the valve being too tight and not sealing. If thats the case you might be able to get away with a new valve, a valve seat grind, and the gaskets required to reassemble after the work.

I did not realize you were so close. I bought a gen 1 engine last year oot of a crash so I assumed it was a runner, sitting on my garage floor. Will let it go cheap. I does not have cams in it and most of the electrical. I will check it oot better if you are interested. I gave 80 bucks for it and will let it go for that and a twelve pack.

What were you thinkin buying such an old bike ??

Find something newer on CL, cuz there are lots of other problems that could ruin your VF project.

Unless you can do all the repair work yourself, it makes no financial sense owning a troublesome, worn out old slapper when you could find something newer and more reliable.

So you got it cheap??? That should have been a clue.

If the Mother Theresa of VFRs (TC) wants to help, you're in good hands, but it still would be best to find another bike.
