As a sort of Spin off from the " VFR back albert bit taller thread " I'm wondering how many VFR riders take their VFRs on dirt or Gravel occasionally accidently or deliberately ? Personally I live to explore different country back roads though aim to keep my VFR 99% of the time on tarmac but if a great twisties needs you to navigate a dirt or gravel section in order to get there then may as well enjoy it.

Below photos are from the sandy dirt and Graded Gravel sections needed to go from my state in NSW but well worth it to get to a full 60 miles of unrelenting mountain range nicely tarred twisties South over the border.

Beginning of the rough gravel ridge line section:

Nicely graded sandy section, note it winding through the hills into the distance:

Nice, the DRZ400 etc is an excellent motorcycle.

I'm in the "Yes, have no problem but only as a means to get to a fun road " camp. Usually before I get the the above dirt roads pictured I've already ridden 460 miles or so of sealed back roads that day and only need to do the unseald sections to link to the 60 miles of awesome sealed twisties but if their were a convenient sealed road to get there would take it in preference.

+1 It's great off road, I found the lighter more HP E model mint with a 100 miles on it, making it street legal in AZ is easy, I did emissions before uncorking & rejetting the FCR flatslide for my MRD SSW exhaust.... but my arse would be in the Guinness World Records book if I ever did 400 miles on the road.

My first half mile or so on the VFR was on dirt. The original owner lived on a dirt road.
I was nervous as hell the first time I borrowed it. Now it is not so bad, but I try not to ride on dirt if I can avoid it.

Wow green rolling tree covered hills white capped mountains in the distance you couldn't ask for better scenery, was the reason of the ride to see the view or a bonus from the ride through the mountains twisties ?

It was kinda one of those, "I wonder where this road goes to?". Turns out there are hundreds of miles of hiking trails up there which are frequented by poeple from all over the world. Seems to be a lot of people from certain parts of Europe who hike there. If my knees weren't so buggered up, I would love to hike them too. But in my previous life, I had managed enough Search and Rescue Operations to know better.

I lived 1/2 mile down a dirt road in SC so it was nearly a daily occurence when I lived there. Now, I only do it when I need to. There are several awesome roads in Bucks County, PA that are easily gotten to by a shortcut or two. I also road almost 15 miles to a peak in NC, but I don't know which one it was. It was on the same ridgeline as Mt Mitchell.

    KC-10 FE out...

I learned to ride in the dirt - flipping over on hillclimbs more than once. But I am not keen on taking my VFR on a gravel road. Especially the downhill bits with linked brakes. Maybe I am just a Nervous Nellie.

Here in Nevada, almost everywhere we go on long rides, we end up in dirt or gravel, so yes, I do it often. A couple times it was for quite a few miles on a stretch of road that was under construction but we didn't know before heading that way. Couldn't really turn back, so we went ahead. The packed stuff doesn't bother me. Even the small gravel doesn't bother me too much. I don't like the larger gravel or soft sand. I ride slowly and with my feet down in those conditions.
