Staight pipe exhaust, running lean?

    Wheres canib wiskey technologies when you need him?????If its an after market muffler i wouldn't worry about it. The way it was worded it sounded as though you cut off mufflers and ran straight pipes.. also some one says straight pipe no more power? guess you never seen those muzzy drag pipes on the zx14 anyhoo.. how to tell if its lean.. run it down the highway wide open then kill engine and check your plugs they tell everything..white bad, brown good, black always bad..good luck and let us know when you have to do a rebuild...

    bladrnr, yes i cut off my gutted stock cans, and welded the tip onto the factory mid pipe. I was going to cut off the cat and run two tubes up and into the cans, to have true dual exhaust. But didn't have the time to get into that, so maybe next time. Like to do something different then everyone else.

    If you were talking about my earlier post what I said was " I’ll put up some serious bucks if you show me an otherwise stock bike that makes more HP, and has a better torque curve, with a straight pipe." and I'll stand by that. This thread got me thinking so I stopped by the Ducati dealer that has the best dyno tuner here in ABQ and was talking to them about slip on exhaust vs a straight pipe. They told me that the race bikes they tuned (mostly local level I assume) had a smoother torque curve and made better power with a straight through type, aftermarket exhaust. The drag bikes like running a straight pipe because all they care about is peak HP and are not as concerned about how the motor runs at less than wide open.

    now i have 93 VFR750F with a straight pipe and as far as i know i dont have a catiless or a 02 sensor but she still runs lean/rich but she dose not run hot she runs pretty cool in fact

    any thoughts or advise

    Kind of an old thread, but if you want to hurt your brain a little bit, get a copy of this;

    Scientific Design of Exhaust & Intake Systems — Third Edition

    I think the most important thing to realize about an internal combustion engine is that it is a system; a change in any one area will affect the entire operating range to some degree. Sometimes you get lucky, and the change is beneficial to what you are trying to achieve. Other times, you aren't so lucky. That being said, the only way to know for sure what any change has done is to use the tools designed to measure it, as in a dyno and an exhaust gas analyzer. I think the only exception to that would be a bolt-on accessory from a reputable manufacturer with instructions on what else needs to be modified, i.e. an aftermarket exhaust system that tells you the recommended jetting changes or F/I mapping alterations.
