I've been thinking about all the different options for getting more sound from my '02 VFR800. Still trying to save up money for new slip-ons, but I'm really impatient. Been thinking about gutting the stock exhaust(after seeing it in another post). Also been wondering about just removing the mufflers and just running a "shorty" pipe right off the cat. Haven't heard anything about this being tried. Anyone know the negatives?

Excessive noise? They do sound cool but the noise is too much.

I like how it sounds, just wondering if it might mess up the performance.

engines in general are designed to work with back pressure. I would imagine that it would mess with the proformance a bit at the least. i havent really done it much so i dont know, but i do know that people remove cadalac converters and get a little gas mileage, so i would assume that there is more back pressure than needed for the purpose of emissions.

what fully removing the exhost would do i dont know, but i would not recommend it. ask squirrelman. he would know.

+ 1 on the noise.....Not a good idea and it will mess with the low and mid range. Will not hurt to try it....lol....it is loud. Fun for just a minute. PM Chuckman49, he has the set up you want, a good combo on a budget. He is a good guy and will help you.

If you change a stock muffler it will probably not need to be re jetted UNLESS you change the intake.

If you change the intake and the exhaust then you WILL have to rejet.

If you change JUST the exhaust, and it backfires on declleration, then just richen the mixture screws.

Yes it was cool for about 2 miles then it was just annoying as crap echoing in my Helmet... I do not recommend doing it.At mid range RPM"S it's just annoying as nails on a chalk board.I came right back home and threw the cans back on and was sane again...

Just remember one thing . . . noise annoys.

Why irritate the general public towards motorcycling?

Personally, I love loud bikes . . . on the frickin track!

Just gut the stockers. On your bike it will sound pretty good, several have done it.

I could be wrong, but I think that the cat provides more than sufficient back-pressure. If you've seen my recent thread, you know I'm in a situation without ANY muffler. I'm afraid to ride it as is.

I know when it comes to cavitation and back-pressure with a standard V8 engine, the headers do the magic. Their pipe size is what is critical. When you start swapping mufflers, removing them, etc you might have to adjust the mixture a tad, but it is never critical (rejetting carbs or anything).

However, bikes are probably different. My '08 is my baby and I wouldn't risk fouling it up, running lean and burning up pistons, etc until I either:

    1. get exhaust on it (even stock, im currently asking around for some)
    2. get the little programmer box and can adjust the mixture

Just my two cents. Oh, and FYI - the tail section looks like POO without mufflers under it. If you are good with fiberglass and can mold a new under tail section or something, do it and send me pics! V4 engine with motoGP style exhaust is very appropriate (do a search ;) )

    Hope that helps a bit

well, to better answer your question- i was in an accident that ripped my exhaust off, so i was without one for about 6 months...needless to say, it sounded like you were at a nascar race whenever you hit VTEC...and your powerband changes significantly. i just had my valves checked...and there wasnt a single change made.

if you dont mind being heard from the next county over, its pretty sick.

Well I took off the stock cans, and put on a Moto GP pipe. They don't make one for the VFR800 so I am using one from a CBR1000. The sound was pretty loud but quieted down when I put the pipe on. I do agree about the tail looking ugly without the stock cans. Working on fixing that problem. Loving the new sound.
