Some of you may recall this thread http://vfrworld.com/forums/general-vfr-discussions/32176-5-days-august.html

Well today was the first oportunity I've had to go for a ride since then.

When giving it the beans following a corner I get a big bang and pain on my hip and heel.

    Chain failed

Happily I didn't come off as it spat the chain out the back

    So I'm down

    1 LH rear peg bracket
    1 Chain guard
    1 Chain
1 Pair Sidi Black Rain Boots
A painfull heel and a cracking bruise on my hip

    Hey-Ho such is life

Yikes! Sounds like a thoroughly unpleasant experience. Luckily it didn't cause a crash.

Damn Tris - that's no good!! Glad you are OK.

Any idea or details on why you think the chain might have failed? Was it new? Old? Master link type?

I'm sure it happens often enough, but I can't recall a post on this forum in the last 2 years where someone had their chain fail.

Happened to a friend of mine once on his CBR900RR. We were just cruising along with me a couple hundred yards behind him in the right hand track when suddenly I saw what appeared to be a snake on the road. Since I fixated on it (yes, stupid) I damn near hit him as he pulled over to the right in front of me. Once I'd circled back I realized what had happened. His had just parted and smoothly exited off the rear sprocket. Luck of the draw I suppose - but being on a low power setting probably helped. His had about 20k on it when it failed - though he ran the snot out of that RR. May it RIP.

    Hokey smokes you are lucky.
How do the sprockets look? I have heard ugly stories of chewed up sprockets and disastrous get-offs from broken chains.
Glad yours was not one of them.

damn, that sucks! This is exactly the reason that my girlfriend dropped $89 on a new chain for my '86. It was so far stretched that I reduced my wheelbase by 1 1/2" by putting the new chain on. I only had 2 graduations left on the swingarms scale... it was slightly worn out. LOL

    Glad your ok, though.

    Thanks for the kind thoughts.

As to why it went - who really knows.

I guess that the scrots who nicked him could have done something or it was just its time to go.

Anyway I'm not going to brood over what might have happed or I wouldn't get on a bike again.

So to lighten things up a bit though here's a picture of my ass bite

My heel only has a slight bruise on it.

It defo didn't have a master link

As to old/new. It had a bit of a tight spot but had been adjusted the week before I went away in August as part of of a service and I'd have expected him to have said something if it was shagged.

Hey ur lucky to be alive you coulda been mince-meat u know. Saw a series of pictures of a road race bike tossing its chain in RoadRacing World magazine a while back. One of the pictures has the racer in the turn with the chain airborne in the background. I got a 91 Viffer and did 4 chains so far in its life, I invested in an EK or maybe its an RK chain riveting tool. Real tasty tool with its own blue metal box, made in Japan too so you cant beat it. Truly amazes me how something like that can happen, but you know what they say, about chit happening. Cheers and get some good steel sprockets and a gold chain with a riveted master link.

Sorry to hear about your chain. But it does sound like another happy ending compared to what could have happened. Glad you were wearing boots.
