I'm looking at getting a 1895 VF700F as my next bike, and I've got a few basic questions.

In the past, Ive owned a few other Honda motorcycles, all I4 motors, but still fine bikes.

The biggest things, since I've had a couple CBR's that were known to enjoy the taste of voltage regulators, are there any typical issues on an 85 VF700? I pretty much want to know before plunging into a new project with little info.

I seem to recall something relating to the top end being poorly lubricated at one time, but havent found anything on this pertinent to the VF700 so far.

I'm far from afraid to work on a motorcycle, after having built a complete first gen ninja 1000R from the ground up pretty much, so I'm absolutely capable of dealing with anything needed to be dealt with.

    I appreciate any input possible.

The vfr does like to eat R/R's too, so look out for that.

I can't help you with the oiling problem, but there are threads about that on here.

My last bit of advise is to ignore/avoid squirrelman. He seems to like to bash people in their choice of motorcycle, if that motorcycle is a 1st gen vfr.

bob, the problems you had with your CBR's is disturbingly common with a HELL of a lot of Honda bikes, and the problem seems a little worse with these interceptors due to the fact that the R/R on our bikes is actually internally grounded.

A while back, when the electrical gremlins started to crawl around my old 87 Viffer and cause me problems, I went on a total tyraid to learn about the nature of the electrical problems and how to fix them in a preventative manner, so I wouldn't have to deal with them again. I put together the biggest problem children, if you will, and put them all in this thread here so hopefully others could benefit from the time invested, and hopefully not fall victim to these problems....

Go 86 or newer if you want less problems (2nd gen or later).
I would not want a 1st gen as my only rider- my opinion.

im gonna hafta begrudgingly agree with Dukie here....those older VF bikes do look and sound like a lot of fun, but the differences between the VF and VFR's are seriously night and day, and honda really did hit the nail on the head when they made the engine improvements (as well as a TON of others) on the 86+ model VFR's. I do know the old VF's have that top end oiling issue with the engine, but I'd imagine there's a kit out there somewhere to fix that, but I can only imagine how tough parts must be to find for those bikes, especially mods, etc.
