    my speedo is not working. i have replaced the speedometer cable with a new one, and a friend of mine, actually the previous owner of this vfr, dove into the bike to try and figure things out. he came to the conclusion that it was the speedometer drive (i think was what he said), a small orangeish brownish plastic circle which slips onto a 14mm bolt head. i think he said this was on the countershaft, but im really new to vfr's and dont know much of the bike's quirks and logged temperaments. a search of google yeilded a couple of promising links, which turned up dead.
    i ordered a new spedometer drive. i id'd the little plastic thing on a parts store microfiche and hoped for the best. i wasnt with my friend when he was working on the bike, so im not really sure what to do once i get my part in. he lives in another town and our schedules are pretty different, so any help from yall would be greatly appreciated.

    I am gonna take a guess and say it is a gen 3, remove the driver from the sprocket cover and inspect the coupler for damage. A VERY easy repair. 1/2 beer job to remove and install driver.

    You slowing down in your old age? I don't think the wife can get me a beer, let alone get half of it down, in the time it would take to swap out that plastic part off the countershaft nut.

    Time estimates are given not in mechanic beer times but in non mechanic beer times.

    ah, sorry. my mistake. i thought i had included that this is a 1992 vfr 750. i poked around today to see for myself what it looks like and it makes sense to me now. the plastic thing slips on the nut on the front sprocket and drives the speedometer. it is breaindead easy. i just hope the correct part is on its way from the local bike shop.

    glad you cleared that up- this may be something you will want to include in future posts since Mechanic Beer Time (MBT) is now more or less a scientific provable fact.

    Ok

    MBT= NMBT x 4

    for example , a skilled mechanic can compete a job in the time it takes him to down 1 beer, but a non-skilled mechanic will drink 4 beers while he is figuring out WTF all this shit hanging off a Honda does and why its in the way.

    3MBT= NOOB x 12.5 + 24 + (6 x MBT/2)

    for example, a skilled mechanic, and we're taking a guy that fools with Hondas here, will complete a reasonbly complex job in 3 beers, of course one must remember that Honda mechs can down beers pretty quick, but they pretty much do it with greasy hands and in between making shit fit up, so that kinda mitigates it a bit, but bascally they get it done in three beers.
    The noob has to get tools and figure out how to get it apart and on and on and on until he get to a twelve pack, and which point he's toast, so he drinks another half and goes to bed, then wakes up and tries again tomorrow, at which point he's into about a 6'er, unless he gets some good advice from the Honda mech on the difference between what will bend and what you actually have to remove, then you can divide by two.

    It can be tough to accurately pinpoint actual beer comsumption times, for the reason stated above , but so far the best estimates by those in the know put a beer downed by an experienced Honda mech at : 35 seconds for beer 1, 5 minutes for beer 2, and then its ....get the work out the door let the beer set until Im done....for beer 3 and so on.....but its pretty much 15 to 25 minutes between beers from 3 to finish

    Hope this helps Toe.....in case your charging people.

    All this time, I've wondered where the term "Flat Rate" came from. I see now that it has to do with carbonated beverages sitting for too long... so more flat beers equals more time.

    Thanks for clearing that up! :biggrin:
