I know very little on the bikes history, When i bought the bike the guy who sold it to me said it was in an electrical fire. I replaced the original fuel pump with a Mr. gasket from autozone, changed plugs, replaced any burnt up wires and eliminated the after market blikners as they weren't working properly. Now the bike starts and runs but it WILL NOT let me get above 6000 rpm as if it had a restrictor or something. It'll rev to redline without hesitation if i HOLD the clutch lever. I found the regulator/rectifier wasn't working properly and I'm waiting on delivery. Could this be the problem? any help would be great! I'm stumpped!

Here's my pennys worth for what its worth

Firstly a wiring diagram for the bike is needed.

Asuming that an 86 works the same way as my 93 does. I have to pull the clutch in if I want to start the bike with the side stand up but in gear.

Somewhere in the circuit, pulling the clutch must bypass the normal operation of the engine. If you can work that out you might be able to fix it.

I'm not sure though why a faulty RR could be the root cause of the problem.

I'm sure somebody else will be along soon who will be able to cast more light on the problem thani can

    Good Luck
