Hey guys - I had been looking to upgrade to a newer VFR and ran accross this 1986 VFR 700. Not what I am lookin for but really neat - figured I would let people here know. The bike looks well kept and is at CBC Cycles in Colchester, CT (cbccycles.com) and has 27k miles on it.

This post caught my attention as I am looking at the same vintage bike here in Canada. It's listed for $1500 with similar mileage. It apparently has a charging problem that the owner says is either a short in the harness or the regulator. I figure for that price, I can't go wrong even if I have to spend a couple hundred on some repairs.

    Opinions?

I know you are a fun lovin' bunch - I only said that to get a response. Those of you who did respond however, misread my post. This is not the bike I'm looking at. It's this one: fredericton.kijiji.ca.

I would appreciate your thought on this bike and whether the electrical gremlins it apparently means I should pass it up.

    Your friend,

Do you know the mileage and maintenance history? I've read that bikes go for quite a bit more up in the land of milk and honey so $1,500 seems like a good deal to me.

If a few electrical gremlins have taken up residence my recommendation is to carefully inspect the wire harness and all the connections working your way through the different circuits checking for continuity with an ohmmeter.

On this note a Factory Service Manual is really a must have for any vintage Honda owner. They are worth their weight in gold, IMO.

    Good luck!

Birch....to me that bike looks like a good deal. Try and do what IC said and look for burnt/melted wiring whereever possible.

With these bike it's most likely the Reg/Rec....but you never know.

If the bike looks to be in as good a shape as the pictures show.....plus with that aftermarket exhaust I say go there and negotiate a price.

    He's asking $1500....you won't pay $1500 for it.

The bike has 45,000 km (28,000 miles), new tires, carbs tuned, and a few other maintenance items. It's looking like a good deal so I think I'll go check it out - it's about a 3 hour drive and because the battery is not charging, I'll to bring a truck.

Thanks for the feedback - if I end up buying the bike, I'll post details.

28,000 miles sounds good and can't go wrong with a classic Honda dressed in red, white and blue.

Good luck and have fun. Keep us posted on how you make out.

your right I did misread.......check the wiring by the solenoid.. look for burnt wires.....if they are its not to hard to fix but your gonna need a R/R... Slobird is right...even if it looks as good as it does.your not gonna pay 1500. for it.... your gonna dump a small amount into it fir the electrical problem and you might as well get a new battery for it...

    Good luck
