Malcolm Smith was world known for riding motocross, Baja and other events ,so I do not know if he would have collected that type of motorcycle.
Maybe a trials bike or 6 day trials but a street road racing bike?

And the year 1982? I was under impression that the VF1000R was only offered in 1985-1986.

None of it makes sense to me.

The VF1000R was first introduced in 1984 in Europe, Australia and <I think> Japan markets. The US only got it in 85 and 86.
