You should be able to machine slot the existing cam bolt holes in the OEM sprockets to allow enough movement for phasing.

 

This is a great mod for any bike.

Exactly!

+1 on the cam timing comments. Stock engines often are off from what they "should" but a significant amount. Degreeing in the cams can make a noticeable difference.

Would anyone out there happen to have the stock cam lift specifications for the '84/'85 compared to the '86?

 

The only reference I have seen about cam lift was in Cycle 07/84.
Intake was given as 7.8mm, exhaust was given as 7.6mm. We can safely assume Cycle refers to '84/'85 models.
