Hey everyone, I am new to forum, I own an ednuro bike and a road bike, but have been looking at the VFR as a next road machine, my current is a GSX750F Katana (2000 model). I really like what I have read about the VFR, however I am little concerned with its potency. I dont do a lot of high speed highway work (i.e. over 80mph), but I want a full fairing, semi street fighter type bike. So, back to my post title - "how easy does the FVR get it up"?

Love some general opinions (BTW I am look at an 07/08 model).

    Cheers

I don't know why so many people are concerned about the VFR's power. Unless you plan on racing the bike it has more than enough power to satisfy in my opinion. After all, does it really matter on the street if the motorcycle next to you is able to hit 100 mph a full second quicker than you? My best advice is to ride one and decide for yourself. These machines are great all around bikes that work equally well on the twisty roads or going crosss-country with fully loaded hardbags. Also, I'm not exactly sure what you mean when you say "Full Fairing Semi Street Fighter" bike. Unless you plan on heavily modifying the cosmetic appearace of the VFR you are better off buying something like the Yamaha FZ1.

    Welcome aboard.

Anecdotally: I often find myself exceeding 100 mph while passing people on the highway. I simply pull out, roll on the throttle, and zoom. Before I have made it passed the slower vehicle, I am going over 100. Just sayin'

I have a 07 and have no problems pulling the front off the ground with just the throttle (I don't slip the clutch).I also have no problems running 100 mph up the road and still have plenty of power left to go even faster if I want. There is no LACK of power on the VFR. When I take the bike to the local bike night i get tons of questions and comments on it also. The pipes under the tail and that single swing arm are awesome.Btw Im not a little guy either 240lbs and the bike still pulls like a monster!

rawsaw, I'm confused by your question. Are you concerned that a VFR may have too much power? I only ask because you stated that you "don't do to much highspeed highway work."

One thing that I can say, regardless of power- is that a VFR, in every concievable way, is a much better machine than your current Katana.

Ditto - If you want a fast bike then check the supersports. If you want a bike that is fast that you can use for touring then check the Hayabusa, ZX14 and older Blackbird. The VFR is a comprimise, but it is the best all round do everything bike you will find. The only true competition to a VFR is a BMW or a Triumph Trophy or Sprint. I am blessed to currently have an 03 R1 and a 2k VFR. I ride with a club and I am the older guy. My guys are aggressive riders and I keep up with ZX10s, ZX636s and CBR1000s and 954s on my VFR. On the straights and at the track they have me for lunch, but in the twisties I can do some passing. It isn't all about the bike - the rider does makes a difference. I cruise in tripple digits so your talking about going 80mph (lol) is a joke for a fast bike. You do not need a fast bike to go 80mph (lmao) - my old man Suzuki crusier (800cc) can do 120mph and it has about 60hp @ the wheel - not a very fast bike and with crusiers it is about torgue and comfort anyway. If you want a street fighter then find something used in good condition and get to work - good luck. If 80mph is your top speed or the fastest you plan on going then a VFR may be too much for you, let alone anything faster. You may want to check a Suzuki SV650 of the Kawi 650 for what you are talking about. Oh and a good cheap streetfighter alternative here in NYC is a Kawi KLR 650 - nice bike. Whatever you decide to do have fun, enjoy yourself and be safe.

That's how I was brought up.

And an FZ1 would make a nice addition to the garage.

    Thread HiJack Alert =
    Dear Sir,
Just curious (i am a new rider) what gear do think you would usually be in at that point?
    Maybe 4th?
or do you simply downshift as you pull out - (LoL) - (there's a nice pun there somewhere!).
I am working on shifting gears and making moves and such like that more smoothly.

Comparing the VFR to a Katana is like comparing true art to finger painting. Right off the bat it is sometimes hard to tell which was done by a 4 year old but when it comes down to it one of them is a masterpiece and the other a fridge decoration. The VFR is truly a piece of art.

I used to ride a CBR 600 and loved the lift off, I was concerned there might be too much touring to this sport bike. WRONG. My VFR gets me where I'm going faster than a fat kid to an all you can eat cake buffet!

At highway speeds you'll ned to drop at least gear to get any kind of get up. 4th is advisable.

To the original poster - what makes the vfr such a great bike isnt its top end (which it still has plenty). Even a 600 supersport makes more horsepower than the vfr800. However, the v4 provides a whole lot of torque down low to make around town riding easier and smoother, rather than having to rev the bike to 6k to get much motion out of an inline 4.

in stock form the VFR is anemic. It has a confounding power delivery when it is stock. it makes a great sound, spools up relatively quick, but it isn't very inspiring. there is quite a bit hidden in those cases, but the stock bike is pretty gutless and the suspension sucks. the stock bike is a good noise maker though....

I didnt read all of the posts, but ill say this about the vfr, itl get on tbe highway in 1st gear faster than you can say, "hmm, i wonder if i should shift yet, na, i wana take off faster)

to be a bit more direct, nothing is better than being on the highway behind a semi, dropping 2 gears then all of a sudden you are ahead of the semi.

and doing it with the stabilitity and controll of a 550ish lb bike. something that those small cbr's and ninjas cannot do. thus the reason they weigh 300-350. (depending on the model, some of them weigh more, my 900cc ninja (never rode it) was 350ish.)

I personally would never want a bike that ligh weight for dirving off of the track. but even at that there are plenty of guys here that can out ride ninjas and cbrs using their vfr.
