The '86 has more mid-range torque but less horsepower (top speed), IIRC.

Other things to note – the ’86 has smaller main jets (#90's) compared to the '84 – which had the largest main jets of all the years, a smaller 30mm carburetor bore vs. the '84/'85's 32mm bore and lower setting for the rev limiter.

I believe these changes were implemented to help provide a bit more longevity to the engine based on the designers pushing the limits of the valve train design/manufacturing capabilities back in the day.

I have been doing some research I thinks its an 1985? If that changes anything? I plan on ripping all the unessary electrical crap off of it and simply running ingnition and battery and starter. is there anything I should be careful with when doing this?

I wouldn't worry about the year since I'm assuming you will be doing engine work anyway. The 500 engine does not require any special electrical functions, eliminating all but the bare necessities would be just fine.

I would check the engine and the carburetors to see what year they are. At the very least this will be a good place to start as a reference point.

Also, take a look at the spark boxes to see what year they are - as mentioned the '84/'85's have a higher setting on the rev limiter.

In terms of performance parts for the valve train (the Achilles' heel on the VF500F) - Megacycle Cams, R/D Valve Springs and Kibblewhite Precision Machining are all good sources.

Good luck with the project and keep us posted on the progress!

That's too bad. I twisted the throttle on one of my 500's yesterday and was able to get over 90mph in less than a 1/2 mile. Seems like you goal would be pretty easy to obtain. Good luck with whatever you choose!

Bummer! I was looking forward to seeing what you were going to do with the engine mod's.

    Good luck in your search.
