the headlights have two sides to them, curious if they are both supposed to be on all the time? Is it meant to just have one for low beams and both for high beams? I can't decide if mine is working properly and they aren't aimed well, have to work on that. Considering HID lights but can't make the choice.

You should only have the left side headlight on at all times. If it's not on, the bulb is burned out and needs replacing. If you unplugged the lights to change a bulb and then plugged the leads in backwards, you will have no lights on at all, but both lights will come on with the high beam switch on. Just unplug them and switch the the leads around. As for HID stuff, I couldn't tell you what is best. There are some adjusters on the back side of the headlights to make adjustments with your fingers (large screw type adjusters for up/down, left/right) which is easy to do. I would leave them alone unless you really want to change where they're aimed. The newer model VFR's have both headlights on all the time and both switch to high/low beam together, your '90 model is not like them in that way and only has one on at low beam, and both on with high beam. The aim of the lights is set by the factory and if you're not satisfide with where they point then that is up to your preferance. Hope this helps.

When I start mine, both sides light up with the "low beam" setting on. When I turn it to "High" both sides are still on but brighter. Something isn't right inside of mine, the bulbs seem too loose. P.O. probably messed things up in there, when I got this machine, it was a mess and I've been getting around to all the problems, mostly wire routing issues. Last owner didn't know how to put it together right. It's pretty mint now.

yeah, thats how mine works too. HONDA used a bulb specific application for this bike but you can trim a standard H4 to work which is probably what the PO did.

Do I need two different bulbs if I'm planning to replace them? What should I buy? 1990 model.

I've owned two 3rd Gens and both bikes operated with both headlights running at all times.
