Welcome to the forum. What generation bike you have (year) might make a difference here... I believe I've read that most people feel the early valve adjustment is most important. Figure this, if you have a valve that is too tight, you'll just keep on burning it up and not know it.
'04 with little over 17k miles just got the bike like a month ago and was going to have inspection and the mechanic mentioned the valve adjustment but heard it could cost some big $$
thanks for the replies.. Ive been reading and seems like most people dont bother or put it off till like 30k miles or so. Anybody out there do the adjustment sooner? and if I do put it off how can you know when its something much needed?
Well, you want to wait another 13,000 miles and hope that all is OK ? Why don't you get it done now, and then you know that its right. It could be OK, but, how do you know it is? Peace of mind , in my opinion. The valves could be too tight now, and could tighten up even more, and , at 30,000 miles, you are up for a huge bill. Just my $0.02 worth
From what I've gathered it seems as though most, but not all, 16k services result in the valves being in spec. It is a costly procedure, more in the $700-$800 range, only to find out that nothing is wrong. However, should your machine be one of the handful that do need an adjustment, you'll want to know about it. I just turned 16K last weekend and I for one am going to cough up the scratch for piece of mind sake. Cost of doing business, I guess.
