Caliper Piston Seal Problem

I was about to assemble the front calipers after I got the new seals today and ran into a problem. The shop manual states, “Coat the new piston and dust seals with brake fluid and install the the piston seals with the small diameter facing in.” One problem, there is no “small diameter” on the piston seals. Both inner and outer diameters are the same. I checked with a caliper and loop. The are the right seals from the dealer. Did anyone see piston seals with a small diameter? Did Honda change the seal? Help!

Considering the way that caliper piston seals are supposed to work, if they WERE different sizes that instruction would be completely backwards. Give them a thin coating of brake fluid (just wipe some on with your finger) and shove them in as strait as possible. Should work just fine unless they fall in like a hotdog down a hallway, then they may be too small.

 

Meh, I would recommend brake assembly lube for piston assembly if you can get it.

If there is writing on the seal make sure it faces outwards is the general rule on seals.
