Hi guys /gals. I have a 2000 FiY. recently following some frantic road riding third gear crunched and went. I now have what feels like a neutral between 2nd and fourth. The selecter is engaging but there is no drive or noise. Just before it went it felt as if I had a false neutral with some grinding noise and then gone. Is this common? How many hours to fix ? All help is appreciated! Thanks.

I believe the transmission needs to be disassembled, as in removing the motor from the frame. At a guess, I would say you'll find a bent shift fork and at least one gear/slider combination that will need to be replaced. The shifting drum should be looked at closely, too, as well as the guide pin for the damaged shifting fork. I don't know the specifics of the VFR tranny enough to be more specific, or to estimate a repair time, but I'm reasonably certain that a shift fork has worn/bent just enough not to engage the "dogs" (large metal tabs) of a gear set.

That sucks like a Hoover. Gen 5 engine removal is a bit of a bitch to add insult to injury on this repair but you need to remove the engine and disassemble to inspect the damage. I would not ride the bike until repaired as it is rare to not have any response from the gear selected at all and lends to more of a seriouse failure that may have deposited larger broken parts in the engine. Time estimate is tough if you have never done a repair like this......I would estimate for myself a day to disassemble bike and engine(12 beers) , another day to repair the engine and cleaning (12 more beers) and a day to reassemble the bike (8 beers and a couple of gin and juice).

Thanks for the advice Guys! I have sourced a motor and box from a crashed one so will be replacing the whole thing. I have done 1000 miles since 3rd gear went and its running fine! If anything Im really appreciating the 4th gear response from about 4K rpm! Only issue is my oil has become milky, similar to if water has got into it.

I have both a blown motor with a good tranny and a low milage (3500) cali motor in perfect condition for a 5th gen(Both from 1998 models) That I would be willing to part with cheap as they are taking up needed space in my workshop. Let me know if you are interested

A broken tranny AND a blown headgasket ??

.......stuff that only happens when the engine is abused, not from normal riding.
