Hey Guys i just decided to register today after leerking around here looking to information for sometime, Well I went to sell my 84' VF500 yesterday and had some issues... All was well and good the person came down and rode it around bike worked excellent. It takes her a little while to warm up before she'll idol at all. Person said theyd see me sunday and just wanted to get his Uncle a bike mechanic to check out the bike. They come down and long story short the guy gave him a repair quote of $500... Saying the Main header was leaking, The Forks are shot and needs new tires(Knew that part). Hopeing you guys could help me out determine if this is true.
    Thanks!

With the engine running, run your hand along the header pipes coming out of the engine (becareful not to burn yourself)

Do you feel any exhaust leaking?

Front or rear header? If it is front and provided you don't have too much rust down at the collector then it is a real simple and cheap fix. The exhaust gaskets are only a few bucks. Pull off the header, swap the gasket, bolt it all back together, done.

If it is a rear header, good luck!

...and for the forks: is there oil leakage from a dead fork seal? Check for oil residue on the fork, often in the form of a ring near a few inches up the fork tube.

Hey guys thanks for the help rain let off today, theres nothing leaking from the rear or front headers i don't know what they where talking about but there is a little clear grease on one of the forks it still keeps compression though? Also my right muffler Gives a lot more Pressure then my left? Replace the spark plugs maybe? or do i need to sync the carbs..?

Does anyone know if the collector distributes the four cylinders exhaust between the two pipes or does left stay left, right stays right?

If the latter are all cylinders firing? I assume since it ran well that they are. Nevertheless, start it up and carefully touch each head before it gets too hot and ensure that all are firing by feeling the heat.

If they are all firing you may have a block somewhere in the exhaust, either collector or muffler.

re. forks - wipe them clean and dry. Compress them hard several time, easiest done with a quick ride and some moderate braking. Check the fork again. If there is any oil residue at all, your seal is gone.

Keep in mind also that the uncle may be simply trying to get the price down!
