To cut a lot of waffle short, I bought my VFR 800 in London where my folks live and rode it around for a couple of days with no probs.

Then rode it back to mine (near Bath) about a 2 hour motorway journey. At some point either on this journey or one of the smaller ones before (or maybe prior to the dealer selling it to me) the reg/rec failed. My 2 hour journey with the battery charging at around 19v not only fried the battery to the point that is was almost round, but cooked my CDI AND all the electronics in my clocks and lcd! What a fucking result!

So what was initially a bargain buy has now cost me considerably more. Very unfortunate seeing as you don't appear to get much warning that the reg/rec is about to die.

Just wanted to share my pain.

that sux. We have head numerous stories of the failure of the r/r. I ended up swapping mine over to one from a yamaha R1. I was able to pick it up on ebay for like $40 or so. It wasn't very hard and has much more cooling surface. Maybe you could get a CDI from there off a totalled bike. Mine gave me lots of warning, though. We have had a few members whose bikes actually caught fire. I'd say ebay is your best bet with all the things you need at this point. The suck part is waiting for different parts from different people, though.

    Feel your pain.

It's funny you should mention about the 'other' CDI. The mechanic I took it to managed to get me a second hand CDI and a pattern reg/rec for about £250.00 for both. He has seen a few VFRs with reg/rec failure and reckons the pattern part is more reliable than the original, but I'll bear in mind the R1 option - are the connections the same or did you have to mod it.

Also for anyone else reading this I am trying to find a circuit board for the clocks and LCD which was also fried in the whole saga.

I had to mod it, but someone on here had done it so I followed their post about it, then changed it a little... I posted up the whole thing step by step in the mechanics garage I think... if you use the search function you should be able to find it with 'making yamaha r1 regulator work for 5th gen' or something real close to that.

Sorry to hear of your burn out.
My next mod will be a voltmeter (as suggested from this site) to keep an eye on the R/R. Hopefully, if it goes I will know and minimise damage
