I just got the bike running but it will only stay running if I hold the throttle open slightly. I am assuming that it is because my idle is set to nothing. I had to tear apart the carbs and put new seals and lines in-between all of them so I may not have set it properly. I do not know much about bikes I am learning as I go. But the fact that I got it running really makes me happy despite my intemperance. Anyway if anyone could tell me why it stalls or tell me how to rev up the idle? Thanks for all your help.

Oh and its a gravity feed for some reason the original owner decided to pull the fuel pump off. Not sure why? what is the advantage of a gravity feed and would it be better to go back to a fuel pump?

you'll need to have the carbs synchronized after having them apart like that. Also make sure the fuel screws are turned out 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 turns from lightly seated. Idle on these machines are in the area of 1200 rpms give or take 100 either way, so if it doesn't hold idle smoothly at that speed then you're most likely not synch'd.

Thank you I have found documentation that shows how to manually sinc carbs so I will be doing it myself. when it runs it runs smoothly so I am sure its pretty close to balanced as it is.

Lazy is right on. No cutting corners, a good balance is worth gold.

As for the fuel pump, the 500 is proven to run just fine on gravity feed. The '86 model came as gravity feed from the factory.

congrats on getting your bike going!

Thank you all for your help I will tinker untill i can get it to idle properly. when I have it running I will take it to get synced and serviced properly. The bike sat for 2 years before I got my hands on it. Its in rough shape and needs some work but most of it is cosmetic.

is your idle adjustment screw functional ??

You should be able to easily adjust minimum idle speed with the screw.
