I want to let everyone know that is outside the central Indiana news loop (I'm not sure how far across the country this is being picked up) of a very sad situation going on here . About 2 weeks ago an Indianapolis police officer was on an emergency run with lights and siren on when he rear ended 3 bikers stopped at a stop light , it resulted serious injury to 2 riders and the death of the third rider . An accident investigation was conducted and as a matter of department policy there was a blood draw from the officer involved . The test results showed the officer was more than twice the legal limit (.19) drunk which was unimaginable to the average person . Several charges were filed against the officer and things didn't look good for him until today (08/19/10) . First off a judge reinstated the officer's license due to a technicality and it was later learned today that due to improper procedure and mishandling of the blood that the evidence has been ruled not admissible and the most serious charges have been dropped against the officer . The upper ranks have held news conference's and vowed justice . To say there is a lack of respect or regard for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department in this town is an understatement and I feel like it will take years or a major overhaul of the department to repair this damage . I encourage everyone reading this to log onto IndyStar.com daily and follow this story and lend support to the victims any way possible . My heart goes out to the victims and there families . The injustice here goes beyond comprehension and at this point I'm left pretty much speechless .

I suppose cops would know how to mishandle evidence and how not to follow proper procedure in order to protect their own.

Wow, maybe everyone who 'mishandled' the evidence needs to be on unemployment.

I don't give a damn how good a cop he is, he was DUI and should be in jail and for a damned sight longer that 2-5 years.

A DUI on duty! People are going to jail down here for that not to mention the death. Manslaughter at least. How very fortunate for him the paperwork was botched and the blood sample contaminated.

I am usually a big supporter of the police, but if these facts are true...this all sucks.

RIP rider, quick healing to the rest, and justice for all.

My condolences and get well wishes for all involved. We in Denver are dealing with a similar injustice that has made national headlines whereby the Denver PD is doing all it can to protect its own. The injustice is so obvious that the mayor has asked the FBI to investigate the matter as he has no confidence in the management of the police department. These types of situations make it damned difficult to respect and trust law enforcement.

Yeah, they're bringing in the FBI on this one too.

It's a huge cover-up from the word "go." I'm sure it's made very clear in an officer's training to take a DUI suspect to a hospital and not a clinic to make the blood draw legal. It's my opinion that the offending officer (allegedly) AND his 'compatriots' who took him to the clinic should all spend time behind bars. At the very least, lose their jobs with some sort of 'felony' tied to their name.

Let me restate whosyurdaddy's very well thought-out statement:
"My heart goes out to the victims and their families . The injustice here goes beyond comprehension and at this point I'm left pretty much speechless."

This is completely disgusting. LEO's are not above the law. They should be treated the same way when they commit a crime. If anything they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law if they violate a law as they are more familiar with what is illegal.

I found this editorial about the situation; maybe we should leave comments?

I've always been a huge supporter of peace officers, and was always willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. But more and more of these injustices seem to be surfacing at an ever increasing rate. If the good-guy cops won't police the bad-guy cops, they're all equally guilty, and deserving of the public's disdain and mistrust. This evil behavior sickens me. I know there are lots of good cops out there, but are they willing to man up and eat their own? I just don't know anymore.

And God bless the victims and their loved ones.

    Sad, oh so sad.

Like we all know in advance, the guilty party WILL NOT get what they deserve. To say this story makes me sick would be a gigantic understatement. One more reason why I DO NOT support the police & probably never will.

    KC-10 FE out...

Such a terrible thing. My thoughts are with those injured and the deceased's family. I would hope that when the FBI gets involved all hell is going to break loose. They,FBI, have been cleaning Cleveland out for the past couple of years. It started small and just grew. I hope the IMPD gets a good going over.

In this day and age of investigative journalism and all types of high-tech research, etc., it's hard to think that (if this is true which the comments make it soound so) some would think they could possibly cover this up for this guy. My guess is that he'll end up doing time, but not much kind of a sacrifice to let the waters calm down. A plea bargain or something and then they'll let him out when they think no one will notice. The people that botched evidence to get him off will get a wrist slap (don't do that again or it's your ass) etc. This is just my opinion of course.

Even if he was NOT DUI, he still hit the motorcyclists at a stoplight .
