Hi all, just got back into biking after a 20 year absence. Picked up a 91 vfr 750 with 15K, decent condition for its age. I have questions about reg/rec, I have read you should replace this part or you could get stranded. I'm kind of paranoid to go a day long ride. What do you think?
First off, welcome to the madness. Second, yes replace it. If the R/R is the original, then you should probably replace it. The newer ones have fins on them which provide for better cooling. Not a whole lot of air flow under the fairings. You can do a search for which one you need, there are several to choose from. I recently replaced mine and it ran me approx. $100 + shipping. Here's the one that I used, but price has changed, went up. It's from Ricks: Regulator / Rectifier. As Toecutter said though, anything is better than the OEM. You can also check here, there are plenty of threads about R/R's.
Welcome to the mad house. About the R/R, at the very least, carry a spare to hook up in case yours gives up the ghost. Some people are over 45k on their original r/r, mine blew at 16k. Fickle things they are...
