Looks like I probably need to replace my chain along with the sprockets on my '87 VFR700.

For some reason I cannot locate the stock gearing, chain type, and link length in either of the two service manuals I own.

The chain I currently have does not appear to be stock. It is stamped RK 50S0, it's o-ring, and has 110 links which I can find no info on. The sprockets that are on there now are 16/45.

Can anyone confirm 16/45 and 110 links is stock gearing and chain length?

Haven't found any kits out there either. I see RK kits for 90-97 VFR's, but that's it. Easy enough to build my own set, but I would like recommendations on decent chains. I would like to stay on the budget/value side, RK, Regina or DID in an o-ring or x-ring type.

Anyone have specific recommendations on chains that fit this bill?

    Thanks

So far this is the chain I'm looking at. Mainly based on brand and price: Regina 530 ORS2BX O-Ring Chain

Actually now I'm finding, RK O-Ring Chain 530XSO is even cheaper.

Not too many people have bikes that old, so help is gonna be a little limited. From what I understand 530 is a pretty heavy duty chain and should last a while but might be overkill. I'm not sure you really need a mini press to install a chain, it just makes it easier, but for that kind of dough I would say go for it. As for teeth on the sprocket, 16/45 is indeed stock for your year. I found it at: http://hondapartsdirect.reachlocal.net/fiche_section_detail.asp That might be helpful for some other stuff too. The sprockets are shown under rear wheel and transmission.
Hope thats of help, good luck.

Thanks for the info. I've been researching parts and found the answer to a lot of my questions.

530/110 link is the stock chain size and depending on the quality you buy a standard 530 should be just about right for a 700. Most of them are even rated up to 1100cc. Rather have stronger than weaker.

I'm going to see if Dennis Kirk will price match and beat by a buck on the chain as I found a good price at Chaparral which is local to me. DK would be better though since it's no tax and free shipping on orders over $100.

Guess I should have looked on the partsfiche first for the gear sizes before I posted. I use www.partsfish.com which works pretty good for me. I've even printed out entire exploded parts diagrams and made my own diagram manuals using those fiche sites. Comes in handy!

    Thanks :)
