I did a track day recently and noticed that the stock rubber footpeg "step" (that's what the VFR parts catalog calls the top of footpeg) made it hard to get leverage on the pegs when hanging off the bike. I fiddled with them and realized they are just held on with two bolts. Is there a metal footpeg "step" that fits on the 5th gen VFR? Maybe from another Honda model? Or has anyone bought another brand of metal "step", drilled two holes in it and bolted it on? I'd rather not drop $100+ on aftermarket pegs.

okay, I'll answer my own post. Spoke to Jim at Tfog Wheelsports in Golden CO (awesome service and prices!), he recommended the Competition Werkes GP Footpeg, $55, install takes about 10 min. supposedly. No feeler peg, so I may bolt one on so I don't tear up the GP footpeg or drag hard parts (dragged OEM footpeg feeler a few times). Another post on vfrworld has good things to say about them. That plus a -1 front sprocket should make my next track day  (my local track, IMI, is super tight, never get out of 2nd gear).
