Is there a difference between r/r's?

An original r/r for a 90' VFR is going to set you back some loot unless you happen upon someone cleaning out their coveted collection of NOS VFR parts. The alternative is to purchase one of these $70-$100 r/r's off of the net.

The question I have is are they all the same? Typically they will specify that "this r/r" will work in a VFR750... and 20 other models. Are they that universal or is someone playing a dangerous game with my charging system? All of this came about because I have reason to believe that an aftermarket r/r might be overcharging my batteries and literally cooking them to DEATH!

If anyone has knowledge on this subject please divulge... Thanks!

I have installed a wide range of R/R's onto the VFR's and must say there is nothing worse in the entire motorcycle world than a gen 3 or 4 R/R. I llike to stick with Honda R/R 's but anything is better than stock for those two gens .I have no real experience with aftermarket but if it is a rip off of the stock version your most likely boned.

found a 1999 CB500T (european model) R/R at a breaker, it plugged right in to the harness, 2K miles, no problems so far. Heard of people using R/R off honda 150-250 scooters too round here in Italy.

The only problem was that the between mounting holes distance was a bit different, no big deal IMHO, would just drill a new hole in the frame plate. I did a complete R/R relocation to a more exposed area, so had to craft a special bracket anyway.

If Honda and others had codified parts coding on spares it would be a piece of cake to substitute not only R/Rs but other parts too but they ain't about to do that.

I'd have to consult my chart to see what geronomination my bought brand spanking new 91 is. I am on my 4th Honda R/R and have a fifth stowed under my seat. I won't be buying any more from Honda needless to say. www.wiremybike has a shitload of R/Rs for all kinds of bikes.

So TG do you have a turbo Guzzi? Way cool! Check out Moto International in Seattle for "the book" on Guzzis and thier participation in part for the Bonneville Guzzi.. Great bikes.. A friend has one of the OHC models that you can eat off.. Beautiful machine.

Old Tshirt joke about "If Harley made airplanes, would you fly?" Some drones use Guzzi engines.

No, dont have a turbo-guzzi, only a stock 1980 LeMans III 850. regretfully its now in boxes awaiting restoration, just too busy fettling my vintage race bikes...

And still, rather than a turbo guzzi I would build something like this if i had the $$$ and time.

sounds like you should have a look at the R/R relocation thread if your bike goes through them like that.

I'm sure a blower will be fine rather than a turbo. My German not only sucks it is non existant so I can only speculate. The language problem first arose when modifying a R100 series BMW with Krauser heads. The bike was a Euro model with the 40mm Bings ect..

I have heard much worse on R/Rs on nearly twenty year old VFRs. Never moved an R/R but have tried a standoff, heatsinks and a muffin fan. I can only conclude the OEM and subsequent replacement R/Rs are shit. No more Honda R/Rs for this guy. When the current one craps out I will install the last Honda version and promptly buy one from "Wire my bike"

It's great if one of these craps out whilst in the garage or a minute or two from home but when one goes in a different country, in this case Canada, on a late Sunday afternoon miles from the border where one can be attacked by moose, a missed day of work, a pissed off Honda dealer who is normally closed on Mondays who was good enough to open, a motel bill, three meals, and a tow charge one tends to get a bit pissy about the quality of some of the parts on his or her bike.

Are you racing the 500cc "Dustbin" GP V8 I wish..

Pulled out the old battery and sure enough, it was bone dry. The rubber cap strip that seals the fluid was slightly melted on one side. I assume this is where the fluid boiled out (if that's what happens). This seems odd that the failure of this R/R would be to let the voltage "fly" instead of just stopping the voltage from getting back to the battery.

Plus, before I ripped this battery out and cursed it, I charged it and got the bike running to test the charging system. At 5000k rpm it was reading 14+ VDC which I took as an ok charging system... Next day battery was dead again. Maybe not an overcharging issue. Maybe a bad battery?

    p.s. WTF?!?!

Just FYI, used the RR from a 2005 CBR600 on my 3rd Gen. I used a terminal block as the plugs are different, has worked perfectly ever since.

I had the same exact thing that happened to my '01. I replaced the battery, installed a R/R from wiremybike and all things are wonderful in the world again.
