Is there any way to raise the rear ride hight on the early VFs without having to get a new shock? I was wanting maybe an inch or two extra in the rear to make up for some custom body work I'm getting ready to do.

You could make some links that are about a half inch shorter. They would run from the swingarm to the knuckle joint that the shock mounts to. I am having ti make some for mine but I'm going down instead of up. Last time I made them, I made the out of 1/4 x 3/4 flat bar and drilled one hole on one end and three on the other side (for adjustability purposes) and on the side with one hole I welded a piece of tubing in between the the two for a spacer

I don't know about the 700 but on my 5th gen. I just placed some automotive alignment shims between the top shock mount and the frame. The change in ride height is 3:1 (meaning a 1/2" stack of alignment shims (or even just washers) yields a 1.5" height increase...simple, cheap and effective...just completed this weekend.

I wish it as simple as adding a spacer, but the top bracket is welded to the frame. So it looks like I'll have to go with the links. Does any one know how long I should make the links from eye to eye?

Well I took a look at the stock links today and I dont think I'll be able to make the any shorter then they already are. Anybody else have any ideas? I really want to raise the rear but I just dont have the money to get a shock from Jamie.

Ok how about taking a piece of 3/16 flat bar and adding on to the bottom of your shock in other words cut two pieces of flat bar, drill two holes one for your shock and the other for the knuckle joint. I don't know how far aprt the hole need to be you'll just have to play around with the measurements. And if you do decide to make links, you'll only have to drill the holes a quarter to a half an inch shorter than the oem holes.
When I made link for my old bike, I think I made them 3/8 or a half inch apart, which would make the holes 3/4 to 1 inch center to center. my link also had three adjustment holes(stock, 2", and 4" drop, but I had a 10" extension on my bike, so the drop would be less at stock swingarm length). Hope this helps
