Hello folks, I am not sure how many read the introduction pages.... but if there is anyone who loves the arguable original VFR, the VF1000R, I would love to talk to you. I have two 1985 VF1000R bikes, my first one was purchased in 1992 with 16,000km on it. When second gear finally went in 2009, I was at 269,000km. I never had to do much to her, but I had to replace the cams/valves in 1996 when a car hit me, and when I left racing, Hindle/my sponsor gave me a custom four into one with a high-pipe silencer. Right now it is sitting in pieces in my garage waiting for me to rebuild her. It has been quite a while since I rebuilt a motor, and I have to admit, I only ever worked on the inline fours in the past, so I find this very daunting. Never the less, tomorrow I am removing the motor, and splitting the cases and getting to the tranny. My second bike is more of a parts bike. It runs great, but leaks oil and coolant like the Titanic (therefore it has become a parts bike). I know long story too short.... but if anyone out there has any experience with rebuilding one of these, and would like to suggest something, please let me know. I am looking at a rebuilt shock from Jamie Daugherty (probably an F2), all new bearings, jet kit, and redone front end, plus the most important, rebuilding the transmission. Second gear will not say in. The last thing that I want to correct is with the battery/charging system. Brad
Jamie is one expert, Dave Dodge another. My some total contribution. Good luck on bearings, etc. There may be some parts on the BAY available. BTW, fairing are available from poly26.com. Larry
Well, I am in the middle of completely restoring my '86 VF1000R. However, I have no motor or transmission work that needs to be done. My bike only has 3500+ miles on it. This is my third restoration. The first was an '86 VF500F and the second was an '86 VFR750F. In all cases, I started with bikes that were mechanically sound. The 500 only had 600 miles on it when I bought it. All of my work has been complete tear downs, detailing and getting the bodywork back to new condition. Check out my photo gallery if you want to see how they turned out. Welcome to the forum and keep this thread updated with your progress.
Hi Brad glad to meet you.Welcome here.its great to know that you want to rebuild your bike.Good luck!
Welcome to the site (I'm new also), wow 269,000km what kind of maintenance schedule did you use, ie. how often did you adjust the valves, change the oil, what oil did you use, etc. And like Stewartj239 said keep us posted on the rebuild.
Welcome! The 1000R is a great bike and I'm sure you'll find plenty of fans on this forum. Make sure to keep us up to date on your progress!
Hey Scotts, Jamie Daugherty is the guy for suspension. He took care of my 84 VF1000 shock problem, the shock he sent me fit perfect and the bike handles great!! He's a pro!! Moy
Welcome. Besides the shock a wheel conversion is a great mod, Jamie can help there also. I have an '85 I rebuilt over the past couple years and I used Jamie's wheel kit. Assume you mean engine bearings in your post? If not I'd suggest replacing them while you're in there, along with the con-rod bolts. Good luck, keep us updated on your progress.
