Actually I get an intermitten spark, but mostly nothing. When I check resistance between blu/w and blu pulse gen. coupler, I get nothing...same with yellow/w and yellow leads---nothing. Does this mean the pulse generators are bad?
Plus, how do I check the spark units? Thanks for any help.

assuming this is your '84 700?

More history would probably be helpful. Has the thing ever ran for you? When did the problem start? Had you performed any other maintenance when this happened?

I bought it last week. Just now beginning to work on it. First thing I did was to check for spark, because the guy I got it from said it was not sparking. Am getting 3.5 @primary coils. It sparks every now and again with plug pulled and grounded. I pulled apart cdi units, they look fine. I am supposed to be getting a pulse reading of 480,,, but get no reading at all. Pulse units look fine,no broken wires that I can tell.
I am going to remeasure air gap and see if that helps.

don't forget to check thumb kill switch wiring. The 1st gen will crank with the right thumb switch in the off position. A problem or poor connection there could be a possibility.

Have you checked more than one plug? The front head and rear head are independent systems - separate coils and pulse generators. The only thing in common with the system is the kill switch. I consider my knowledge on this topic to be limited. I've seen threads with similar problems on the 1st gen in the last year. No doubt someone with more experience with this will chime in soon. Scanning thread titles in the 1st/2nd gen forum may be your friend. The forum is slow in the summer....

    kill switch fine

kill switch is getting 12 v. with switch in run and key on...nothing with switch on kill.
So switch is fine. I'm thinking while not getting any reading at all between pulse gen. leads, the pulse gens are bad,,,dunno, I could be wrong. I do not know or understand electricity. I do know that it will shock the &*%^ out of you!

Another thought. Be sure your battery has a good charge on it.
