Attempted to install a new UNI filter today and the ridge on the bottom won't fit down in the airbox groove to allow the lid to reinstall. I'm able to flex the box somewhat to get part of it to snap in, but the upper part around the top two screws just will not make it. I know my airbox is not warped since the paper element filter I just removed fits the ridge like a glove.

I spoke to UNI and they offered to swap it out for a different one if I can't get it to fit. I certainly don't want to bash UNI, but I have a feeling a replacement won't make any difference.

Anyone else run across this problem?

Not sure if this is applicable, but I read some filters require the removal of an o-ring or something on or in the airbox. I have seen mention somewhere but cannot remember right now where I saw it. Might this be the case for you? I also might be mistaken in this. Hopefully someone else can corroborate or dispute my aging memory.

Well there is a rubber gasket that fits down in the groove on the airbox and around the lip of the lid, but I'm not sure removing this would help. Part of the filter ridge just doesn't even start to get into the lip, gasket or no gasket.

I just bought a Uni filter for my XR 250, and I actually had to cut the filter on the inside to get it fit.

I was a little disappointed that a $36 filter wouldn't fit without cutting it, but it fits really well now.

I bought a uni filter for my 86' a while back before I realized I had a K&N. I just cleaned & reoiled the K&N but I will try installing w/i the next week or so. I have to strip the bike down for paint anyway, I'll let you know if mine is the same way.

Ok thanks. Let me know because I'm getting ready to send it back to the manufacturer or place of purchase.

I have a Uni Filter in my '96, it was easy. Simply remove the old one, install the freshly oiled one. I didn't see an O-ring on mine, although mine is a different year than yours it I remember. Mine is specific on which way is the top, and which way is the bottom. Perhaps you can try flipping it over???

Yeah, I tried flipping it and still no difference. The filter itself is not marked TOP or BOTTOM, but I double checked with UNI and I was correct the way I was trying to install it.

That's odd. After I posted, I went out to mine, and noticed that it was actually marked...duh!!!!!! As if the screen on it wasn't enough. Plus the way the tabs are set up on it, it can only be installed one way. At least Uni is working with you, that's good. I'd definately support them, if they support us.....

To be honest I think I'm just going to send it back to where I bought it vs. UNI direct. For some reason I'm just not getting a warm fuzzy feeling about their service.

Down with UNI Filter/ AKA: Gimme my money back

Piss poor fit & finish; I compared it to my K&N(which was amazingly clean for the miles I put on) way different @ the indents by the front screws. Definetly needs some filing to fit properly, I'm not liking the fact that it doesn't fit up into the top cover at all either. I'm almost ashamed that the package says "Made in the USA"  & people wonder why nothing is made here anymore sheeesh....

tbones86, you just saved me a lot of headache! I was going to order another UNI just to see if I got a bad one, but it sounds as if you have the same problem as I do. The area around the front screws WILL NOT fit as you noticed.

I'm just going to send this one back and may pony up for the K&N or just throw a paper element in for now. Right now I don't have the time to hassle with UNI direct, though I should email them this thread so they can understand what's going on.

Thanks again man, I owe ya one! :first:

Hey, I'd be interested in your UNI cleaner and oil kit if you want to get rid of it. I have some UNI filters on another bike I can use it for. PM me if you want to work something out.
