O.K. I called local Honda dealer & there reply was "we can sell you shims...what size do you need ? " If I remember corretly some parts stores would rent you a "kit" & you pay for the ones used . Anyone know ? . I realy want to be back on the road soon. BTW I have 20,000 miles my 98 and 4 valves are out of spec. This Job is a lot more then it was on my 74 MG V7 SPORT, but I enjoy the satisfaction of knowing it was done and saving the money that honda wants to charge.
You are on the right track now. To get the shims you need is easy. If the thickness guage says it is too tight then tell them you need one that is .oo1 less that the number printed on the one you have.
Here's a file that might help: http://www.daughertymotorsports.com/files/Valve shim sizing.xls I made this several years ago when I was building my VTR1000F engine. Even though it only shows two cylinders you can still use it for the VFR. When determining the shim size needed it's easy to get a decmial place wrong and end up with a shim that is either way too big or way too little. Happened to me. I also found that you sometimes have a shim that is being replaced that is the correct size for another valve. This sheet shows you the shim sizes needed for each valve, what the new actual valve clearnace will be, what shims you need to buy and what shims are reused. Enjoy.
