Ive been looking around for a new bike and this generation of the VFR is really catching my attention. Ive rode it once and agreed that its a GREAT bike. Would have grabbed it if not for some bad comments on it recently. What's holding me back is the comments made on the engine. Ive heard that the 02 onwards V4 engine is expensive to repair once its due. How true is this?

Unless you end up with a complete lemon (which you have a factory warranty to cover anyway), how do you envisage needing an engine repair on a brand new bike?
You will cover 70,000klm/40,000 miles or more to even need an engine repair, generally speaking and depending on how you treat the bike.

Now if your talking about servicing or routine maintenance then that's another kettle of fish.
You will need the dealer in the first year or two to do some things to maintain warranty (check your local laws and regulations regarding the requirements on this).
The V4 is a largely reliable, time proven engine but there are more experienced folks on here to talk about that.

As long as you don't abuse the bike, it should last a looooong time. Of course thats the same on anything you choose. As for the cost of maintenance, it's more than some bikes because of the vtec system, but you can do that yourself if you're so inclined. I know of guys that have over 40,000 miles on theirs and haven't had to adjust a valve yet. I wouldn't worry at all about the cost of repairing the engine. If you take care of it, it could last well over 60-70,000 miles.

I have An 86 VFR700F2. it has 46,000 mi on it. It has had no major problems since I bought it new from Devon Honda in Philly. this bike sat for twelve years without being ridden due to my working out of the country. I still ride this bike today. although I prefer to ride my new 6th gen. I bought a 2006 vfr in march and I have no fear of maintenance costs. the V-4 are very reliable, smooth running engines. I change my oil, religiously, every 3000 miles. I ride at least every fri,sat & sun all year long. I love riding its the closest I'll ever get to a jet fighter.

I'm from Metairie too (Karen St.). For those who question why build New Orleans, why did we rebuild Houston (true shithole), Galveston, and San Francisco?

Expensive is relative. Try rebuilding anything.

The service manager at the dealer I bought my bike from told me the valve adjust (at 16,000) could cost as much as $600. On the other hand, he told me he has never seen one in all his years that needed adjustment. Lots of riders do their own valves and if I was younger, in better shape and ... ooops --- wrong thread, sorry ... (the voices made me say that :) .. .. borrowed that from a poster here somewhere, can't remember who, but it did made me laugh out loud.):yield:

As stated no more than anything else in this class, you take care of it and it will take care of you, it's all relative

I have a 2004 VFR obtained in April of same year. It has 36,765 miles on it as of today. Costs have essentially been maintenance related. Nothing has broken down. 16,000 mile service in NH and 32,000 in FL were in $400 range.
The shims on the Vtec valves showed now wear and one regular valve was a smidge out of speck. Dealer/service dept. familiarity with bike can vary.
