So I'm on a trip to the mountains and the bike (04' VFR800A) craps out on me. I'm able to bump start it and get back to the place I'm camping. Borrow the battery charger and limp it on home the next morning. It produced about 12.5 volts @ 5K RPM when I checked it. I tear into it and the stator is toast. This I already knew. What I don't know is do I need to replace the R/R as well? Enlighten me. Give me good reasons to evidence your argument.

Have you had the update to the wire harness done yet?

The recall for the wiring harness is done. Did it this past fall.

while it does not have to be replaced, i is suggested to replace the r/r when the stator is changed due to failure because the stator can cause the r/r to become compromised, the same said for a bad r/r killing a stator.

If your worried about it, change it, else use it if it works

I have a 3rd gen bike and knew the stator needed to be replaced/I had two compromised wires in my harness that I cut out and used spade connectors/I do have the original R/R and have not had a problem with it so far. I do have a new replacement waiting though. The idea of a daisy chain thing taking out another electric device is possible. I think if your paying dealership prices the wrench might have replaced both units cause it kinda makes it idiot proof. IE no come backs. Anyway, I had a Jeep with a possible bad crank position sensor take out my ECM. ECM checked out ok and then the new CPS took out the computer. Buy a replacement R/R and keep it. Cheers

I fried the hell out of my wiring and connectors to the point that the connectors crumbled when touched. I got sick and tired of replacing one part of the system, just to have another go, so I just got done today putting in a new stator, RR (Mofset), battery, wire patches, and repairing and re-installing my VFRness (thanks to Tightwad at Wire My Bike for getting me the parts quickly!).

For the first time since I got my '98 VFR two years ago, readings with the bike off, at idle, and at 5000 RPM are exactly what they're supposed to be. Took it for a couple of 50 mile rides today in the God-awful heat we're having, and ran it through its paces. Took off the rear fairing and inspected the wiring and RR and there doesn't appear to be any excessive heat emanating from anywhere.

In the name of all that's holy, I hope to hell this will solve the problem for at least the next 30,000 miles or so. I have several long-distance rides planned this year and the last thing I want to be doing when 800 miles away from home is dealing with charging system gremlins. Time will tell!

ordered the R/R today. stator ohms good and the R/R connector ohms good. Not sure I understand the chart in the manual for R/R test but given the known problems with them and the fact that everything else checks out, it sorta makes sense.

I ended up replacing the stator and had the R/R tested at my local Honda dealer. So far so good. I've done a couple of 300 mile days and all is running well.

My Signal Dynamics Voltmeter's been giving crazy reading for the last 10 days, with an omnimeter calling the SD unit low .5 volts. Today, I could smell something electrical burning and when I came to a stop the engine died with smoke, yes SMOKE, puffing out from under front right end the fuel tank. Managed to get the bike back to it's parking area with her doing the same thing at every stop. I've checked the connectors on the right side (handlebar, RR and so on), every one is fine, no sign of wire damage and given the smoke, think there's now KFC wiring under the airbox. She's parked with the battery disconnected but any ideas what I've got here?
