Hiya,
I want to enable my front (and rear, but that's not the problem) indicators as running lights for added visibility. I've modified the "Darth Bling"-schematics (as I have indicators in my mirrors as well that I don't want to act as a running light) and have a list of the parts needed.

My problem is, that my front indicators only have 2 wires going to them, meaning that the sockets aren't even wired for running lights (I thought the European just had different bulbs).

I think the difference might start with the indicator switch on the left which has the following 3 settings:
LEFT, OFF, RIGHT
<====[O]====>

If my assumptions are correct, the US model has a wire going from the "OFF"-position which is the 3rd wire going to the running lights, that way they switch off when the indicator switch has moved to either left or right.

Has anyone tried this mod before and knows what is needed to modify it to the US version? Do I just need to do some wiring, do I need to buy an indicator switch from the US, etc.. I'd appreciate any feedback!

Cheers!

i could very well be wrong, but...

it is illegal (as least in the US) to display any color other than red as continous display to the rear

i have often thought of modding to display full time "running lights" for better viz, but
i dont want to try to explain my thinking (and illegal setup) to officer friendly, who may or may not understand

i am all about any type of HI-VIZ application

my GMAX helmet has an integrated LED light on the rear. switch = off / steady on / slow flash / fast flash
i ride it steady on most of the time, and set it to flash if the conditions call for even higher VIZ
technically, it is also illegal to display a rear FLASHING red (again in US), but ive never had any issue from officers.

i use a flashing rear LED on my road bicycles AT ALL TIMES !!! and sometimes a flashing white in the front as well.

sorry, getting off from the OP in Europe, but I had to ask. You mean continuous red flash? Here in CO I've seen LEO with additional flashing rear brake lights on their luggage racks and I've seen a civilian with a flashing red LED license plate cover that acted as a second brake light.

The US models 2002-2005 use dual filaments. 2006-2009 use the same dual filament bulb but only utilize one filament. They use a different relay that operates the single filament at two different levels of brightness. They do not switch off when blinking as you assumed. From a visual standpoint they all operate the same; dim running lights, bright turn signals. The magic is in the relay.

Cheers for all the replies so far :)
I found a wiring diagram from the 2002 US version and it has two extra wires coming from the switch alright. It looks like the wires come from the head light connectors. I played around with the cables a bit today and I got it working exactly the way I wanted it to (using a normal 12v bulb).
It looks like the indicator cables coming from the switch are actually grounded when the indicator is off and are switching on/off when the indicator is turned on.

This means I should be able to wire the LED indicators to the wire that goes live when the ignition is on (this way the indicators would still work if the fuse for the headlight would blow) and the wire coming from the switch used as ground. Woohoo!

Ok, small update on this.
While it would indeed be possible to do this mod it would be a bit more complicated since I have changed all the indicator bulbs to LED's. I was considering to just turn around the bulbs in the connectors but I also would have to trace and rewire the wires coming from my datatool alarm. While researching this, I found another solution:
Getting switchback/color changing led bulbs instead. That way I would only have to wire 12v to the bulbs via a relay. The indicators would light up white (which I think might look even better on my white/black/silver VFR) as running lights and switch to yellow/off when indicating as per the following video:
.

The cheapest ones I found (with good reviews) are $39.99 + $16 shipping to Ireland:

you've probably worked this out by now, but to carry on..
If the turn switch is sending a ground signal to the bulb, then a positive 12v is at the socket waiting patiently? If so, upgrade your socket for dual filament bulb, and use the positive 12v and use a short wire to jump over to the marker filament. Then just run a ground wire to the closest ground point for the marker filament.
Head spins anyone?!?!?
For me, i'm dying to upgrade my lenses to the 06-09 clears! Then HID for my Beams and maybe some HYPER-LITES; white discreetly mounted front and red California spec 3 WAY tail/brake/turn blinkers in the rear... FOR TO BE SEEN (WEE BIT MORE)
Good luck!!
