Do the LOW Beams turn off when the HIGH beams are on????

When I switch to my High beams basically all 4 of my bulbs are on. My charging voltage drops very low and this is why I think I'm going thru stators. Can somebody here please verify that the Lows are supposed to go off when the Highs are on? Please dont assume please test it and let me know. For the longenst time I swore that my lows would turn off. And now ofcourse I appear to be wrong.

I've got a 2006 and the low beams stay on when the highs are turned on. It's quite blinding actually.

 

Thanks for checking, I wonder if you have the ability and would like to get a voltage reading at the battery with the bike running with the highs off and a reading with them on.
I get 14v with the hights off. And about 12.5v with the high beams (and lows) on. I don't think that is correct.

Anyone else?

 

Verified .When I put my high's on my lows are still on.
I can check tonight with my volt meter.

 

get some low wattage, motorcycle use, HIDs for the high beams and low beams. kind of expensive solution, but i think its the best and most noninvasive solution. you can get them in the 25 watt variety. 25 watts x 4 = 100 watts (for all four HIDs) will be the same as 50 watts x 2= 100 for just the 2 regular low beams.

 

I apologize but I don't have a voltmeter. Sounds like 04VFRVince will get that for you tonight though.

rev it up and your volts will go up,

the 6th gen will put out 500 watts at 5000k

you don't ride around at idle rpms.
you usually ride at 4k+
rev it pass 4k and then test it, it will be fine

 

it should be above 13.8 (battery charging voltage) at all times. Yes the lows are supposed to stay on at all times.
Mine reads 14.09 at 4-5 krpm with lows an 13.99/14.05 with highs on at similar rpms, I have also wired in the second filiment on my lows with a diode to my highs. I would check the connections to the RR from the stator and to the battery for any issues.
now that said, you battery has a nominal voltage of 12v, its usually 12.8 when its been sitting a while, after a long fast rpm ride it should float around 13.2 to 13.6v this is normal and it will drop over time back to the settled voltage(due to internal battery resistance) as long as your charge syustem is not cronicaly below 12.6v the battery will be fine, though may need a couple hours charge every once in a while to start the bike. so ride away, as long as you limit the hibeam usage you will be fine.
