the linkage was wrecked and is missing 2 connecting screws and a spring; the mechanic who looked at it was surprised the bike ran after it was "worked" on.
The carbs were taken completely apart and not put back together properly
It was also missing 2 o-rings and the throttle cables were loose.
This is my 1st bike and it ran well for me, I just can't wait to see its full potential

common mistake people make. Watch ebay or try calling Sport Wheels down in Jordan MN.

I grew up in MN. You better get crackin, riding season is short up there!

Make sure you find carbs that are still assembled on the air plenum and don't let anyone dissassemble them like that again :) The only thing that needs to happen for carb cleaning is removing the bowl cover and the vacuum slider cap.

Yes they will. many threads on the topic. Larger bore and different jetting in the 84/85. Some find the earlier model carbs to be desirable but enhanced performance could be debatable without the earlier model cams to match.

Matt's never ending epic thread on the 500 talks about it some. Good luck sorting thru 50 pages or so.

I'm feelin pretty good about myself then! I pulled mine apart (before I found out about this website) to clean them. In the end, I found that I had to anyway, since they had been apart before, and some of the connector tubes weren't put back right anyway. It was a chore getting it all right again, but I did it! I do have to admit that I know a thing or 2 about this sort of stuff, I work on cars for a living, and part of that is rebuilding automatic transmissions.

I made the same mistake. I removed the base before the carbs. Lucky I only lost two springs and didn't crack a tube. Smith and Edwards, north of Ogden, had springs that I made work. Whoever messed with the carbs before me lost the fuel inlet tube. The winner had the fuel hose connected to the balance tube. Again, lucky Honda still carried it.
Bike has been a BIG learning experience!

I still can't find a set of 86 carbs, anyone out there know if an 84 or an 85 will work? It seems I can find plenty of those.

You would probably need the 84-85 insulators (carb boots) due to the larger size. The carbs are hard enough to get on without undersized insulators!

Yes, they will work. In fact, it is probably the most popular hop-up for an 86. The larger size increases performance in the upper mid to top end. Lot's of people have done it, including members here.

My 84-85-86 hybrid has 86 carbs on it. I have a couple of 84-85 carbs that I am going to rebuild and swap, but that won't be until later in the summer. It looks like there will be a market for my 86 carbs when I am done with them!

    Good luck
