I just bought a 99 VFR today! On my way home, i noticed the high pitch sound, which i read on here maybe the cam gears and is "normal". But it seems kind of obnoxiously loud! And when i pulled up on traffic the temp went from 185 to 220 in about 90 seconds. So my buddy and i thought maybe the noise and temp rise maybe be a faulty water pump? Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated. Again just bought it today, so im not familiar with the nuances yet!
    Thanks Jeff

    Congratulations on your purchase!

    Others will answer better:

It is possible the whining noise you are hearing is the gear driven cams. More details? Does it vary with RPMs or stay constant?

High temps on these bikes are not out of the ordinary, although 90- seconds might be quick from 185. How hot was it outside? Did the temp go above the 220-222 area? Your fan should come on right around 220.

It can't hurt to do some maintenance if you don't have the history on the bike: oil, coolant, flush brakes and clutch, etc.

    Post up some pics, too!

Thanks! Im sure i will be more than happy with it! It varies with the rpms. Again i read it could be the gear driven cams but it truly seems unusually loud. The temp outside was only 70 degrees. I will let it run tomorow to make sure fan turns on! I will also add coolant. Just a little nervous there could be a bigger problem. Also thought of bringing it to Honda dealer just to give it a once over. I mean i can understand if the gear driven cams are making some sound, but it was pretty loud and piercing. My buddy could here it a little bit riding behind me with ear plugs!

They are a unique sound! Is it a stock exhaust?

Your call on taking it to a dealer for the once over. I suppose several on this forum will say to do it yourself, but its your money. I've used my dealer often enough, and slowly but surely learn to do more stuff by myself. If it gives you piece of mind, then go ahead and do it.

Sorry I don't have more technical info for you, but I'm not too good with a wrench. Have faith - you'll get it all sorted out!

Everything sounds normal. Welcome to the gear driven cams. You will learn to love the sound... it is music to the ears. Temps are fine as well. Our bikes get really hot really fast. Just make sure that your fan kicks on between 220-225 and temps drop down to around 210 when it shuts off. I think 222F is the temp when they are supposed to kick on. In town and traffic you will get hot fast and stay that way until your get going 40mph or so. The side mounted radiators don't work too well until you get up to speed. I wouldn't worry about temps till you start edging on the 230F mark.

Today I changed the Clutch fluid, Oil, and coolant. Ran it and found the fan kicked on at 228. It came down to about 212 and shut down. So it sounds like i will get used to it running warm, which I can handle! And the cam driven gears, It is a pretty cool sound, but seems a little loud, i just figured if i brought it to a couple Honda dealers just to make sure the gears dont need to be changed! If someone says its "normally" this loud, I will be ok with it! I only bought it a couple days ago, and dont know enough about it yet! So i just wanna be on the safe side, and also not get BS'd by a dealer. Or if there is anyone in the CT. Mass. area that i could compare to, My nerves would be settled and i could continue to put unlimited miles on this great machine!!!! Thanks...

Might be normal I've noticed my '99 GDC sound is louder than a VFR buddies '01, have also noted other '99s about the same loudness as mine. You can also hear it in belows Clip where the last VFR leaving, a '99 Gen 5 whose whine is noticeably louder than the Gen 5 '01 in front of it.
