Anyone in austin texas or near familiar with this bike and willing to help me rebuild the motor on it or know of a shop that will do it? The crankcase cracked so I bought another only to findout that I am not as good with these engines as I was with the old big block motors. I would also be interested in a good used motor. Thank you. Chris

craigslist is the answer man - either find a donor bike or sell yours.

sorry for your troubles, just be careful not to sink too much money into that thing.

Like TwS said, a donor engine or parts bike is your best bet.

I wonder what kind of abuse the bike went through to crack the crankcase like that?

It was stupid when I went to bolt the stator cover on one of the dogears where the bolt threads into brokeoff. I honed the cylinders on the replacement crankcase and all work is done just need to swap the parts from one engine the the other. Mainly I cant get the crankcase halfs seperated though the bolts are all out even inside. Do I have to pull the stator off too and how is it done? Chris

I just checked my manual and yes, stator must be removed.

    - remove the four bolts on the stator
    - Carefully pull out the wiring grommets and wiring

That's about it, really. Unless you are talking about removing the alternator rotor which you need a puller for after you get the main bolt off. Air tools really help get the bolt off to counter the rotor and everything turning on you if you don't also have a rotor holder.

A buddy and I changed out the rotor in his 03 Yamaha R1 last week. We needed the same tool. I actually ended up using the rear axle off the VF500 which is the same size and thread pitch. I'm pretty sure this will work for you too.

To hold the rotor, try putting in gear and holding the rear brake.
