Hey guys. Pretty soon I'll be back from Afghanistan and ready to tear into my 86 VFR 700. Here she is now.

I'm getting ready to order the correct paint and decal kit to take her back to red white and blue. I've got some platic repair I've got to do, and I'm Going to rejet/rebuild the carbs and am trying to locate all the stuff for the front/rear wheel swap. I've got a guy to recover the seat, and am looking for a good windscreen and seat cowl. As you can see in the pics, it's got old school supertrapps on it, but the discs are gone, with the monting screws broke off in the holes. I'm planning to buy a disc kit from supertrapp and drill/tap the mounting holes. Does anyone have any experience with these pipes? I mean, are they worth the trouble? Good cans or do they suck? Looking at the availability of pipes/cans for these bikes, restoring the supertrapps might be my best option.

Last question, is the top end oiling kit needed? It runs great now, except needing a jet kit with those pipes wide open. I've read that the 86 didn't have oiling issues, and I've read that it did.

Any suggestions or opinions on where I should go with it? It's in great shape, I want to keep the nostalgia, but bring her into the 21st century at the same time.

The Supertrapps are the way to go, well worth the effort to repair. Bolt and disc kits are cheap and they sound great. Do not do a jet kit, just a slight shim of the factory needles and one size up on the jetting, it does not take much. The gen 2 does not have oiling problems and the engine is just shy of bullet proof.

Get back safe man. Thanks for your service!

And that's a nice looking bike right now. Hope you enjoy the roads a bit and tear into the resto over the winter.

Gustafsson Plastics makes screens for just about everything - Gustafsson Plastics looks like they have at least 4 different styles for your 86 all around $100

I put in that one already so you'll have to look elsewhere for a Fox, good luck on the rebuild.
