    Hi,
Im new here and looking at a couple of vfr's. 1 is an 03 in fair shape but has 29000 miles on it. 2 is an 05 that has 12000 miles on it but is coming from a impound yard and has been sitting there since january.
The 03 has current reg and the owner says he changed the oil every 5000 miles, is 29000 miles something to worry about? The 05 has bags, sargent seat, higher windscreen, and other goodies, but also has rusty brake discs and will need tires and a battery and a back registration of $580 both bikes are around $3000 purchase price
Is there anything I should look for as to how they were taken care of?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

go for the bags one, the bags +seat+ wind screen, add about 1200 worth of ebay specials to the bike, if you don't like thats stuff u can sell it and get some $ to off set the price.
+ it is newer and has less miles.
rusty disks just means it hasn't moved, they will rub off when u drive it. every bike needs tires at some point in its life. check the chain if it has been outside for a while, oil it up.
it might need a few other things because it has been sitting for a while

good luck with what ever u pick

I picked up the 05 for $3000 + $800 for back registration. 12,676 miles, givi hard bags, windscreen, ram mounts, autocom 7, really clean bike. Now I just have to get to the DMV so I can ride.
    Thanks for the opinions!!!

Sounds like the impound yard got to this dude rather than some as yet unknown state or municipality. Could even be Colorado..LOL What is what and how to is in the state's vehicle code and may even be full text on the net.

That figure of "around" 3k is a tad bogus. A set of skins, possibly a new battery, potential rust in the tank, shit in the carbs and that $800,00 that was forked over to somebody makes for "right around" four grand if rounding off is OK with the "I'm going to come to a conclusion whether I have enough information or not" set.

What it sounds like is this bike had to be hauled off and wasn't running and we still don't really have a handle as to whether the bike was undercover or not.

Thanks for the comments good and bad. I agree that $ 4000 is going to be the total after all is said and done. $800 is the cost for living in the broke ass peoples republic of California.
The bike needed a battery and will need a front tire. rear tire is near new. The impound yard guy said it was clean and obviously stored inside when it arrived in January2010. Sitting out in the sun until June 10th took a toll but nothing that cant be fixed with some good ole elbow grease. I'm going to change the oil and filter, bleed clutch and brakes, drain the tank, change the air filter, and wash and wax next week
NADA low value is $5170, high is $6700 + it has all kinds of extras.
It runs great and rides great so far...I work 10 hr days and am on a 6 day straight run right now so I will get pics up next week.
I still think I made out in the deal, only time will tell.
I'm no stranger to working on bikes. In 1990 I bought a 1984 vf700 for $200 that was abandoned and totally trashed. I had to replace the motor and built everything from the ground up.
Most recently I had a 2000 BMW rt 1100 that I did all the work on. I replaced the clutch, adjusted the valves, adjusted the throttle bodies and general stuff.
This bike seems in quite good shape. All in all I'm happy and that's what counts here, right?

I'd still check what the California Vehicle Code says or snag a CHP. Impound yards are wrecking and towing outfits with a fancy name and IMO are on par with used car lots and penny stock salesmen. The wunnerful folks at the Cal DMV don't give a shit either. NEXT! lol.

One ace you haven't played is telling them you are just arrived from TJ and they will probably give you the bike and a lifetime supply or 92 octane..

...and on a personal note ditch those Givi bags. Man those suckers are ugly. They are some good for hauling watermelons I hear.

If ya got it running and its right then it sounds like a good deal.

Got a Beemer too. 79 R100RS mit Krauser heads and all sorts of moneypit stuff to make it go.

Nice bike! I think you got a good deal. Can you say which brand your windscreen is? I need to pick one up (the Easterly winds on the freeway in CA are really strong in the AM.)

    Thanks,
I ended up paying $3000 to the impound yard for the lien sale, and $870 to the dmv for back registration to 2006. I got a new battery for $109 and found a new avon tire on ebay to replace the front for $40. so all in all about $4100. It also has an autocom 7, and in the bags were 4 pr of gerbings gloves from warm weather to 12v heated ones, a gerbings electric jacket, a nice poncho and joe rocket chaps. and it all fits me.
