    Hi,

I have a question regarding the neutral light on a 1990 vfr 750. When I bought the bike I noticed that the neutral light comes on each time the clutch lever is pulled.
Is this correct or is there some botched wiring somewhere?

    Cheers

You're probably having a problem with the clutch diodes, which are allowing the power thru when you pull the lever. That's where I would start the quest.

My 1990 nuetral does not come on unless its in nuetral.

I have the manuals to my bike, I will go and look for the location of the diodes real quick. Stay tuned.

P.S. I demand pics of your gen 3

Ok its under the seat, gearshift side of the bike, forward looks to be about 4-6 inches down on the side near the fuel tank.

    from the book:

    1.remove the seat.
2.disconnect the diode from the harness. ( it looks kind of like a blinker relay on a car from what I can tell.
3.Set your ohmeter to the R x 1scale and zero the test leads.
4.There should be continuity (low resistance) in the forward direction and no continuity
(infinate resistance) in the reverse direction.
Replace the diode if it fails this test.

    Hope that helps bro.

I will occasionally see a flicker as I go throught the gears , that is about it. I dont know about the mechanism and how the switch activates ...but I have no problems.

    Cheers

    Bump an old thread.

I have this same problem on my '91. I doubt it's the diodes, but I will check them. I suspect it's something more mechanical at the neutral switch / transmission. In my case the neutral light comes on properly when in neutral, whether clutch is engaged or not (i.e. lever either in or out). HOWEVER, the neutral light also comes on whenever I pull in the lever (declutch) in any gear. It goes out again at the friction point of clutch engagement. It's like the engagement (even partial) of the clutch puts enough tension in the transmission / gear train to move something (shift drum??) to the point where the switch opens and the light goes out.

Any ideas? What does the switch engage against that moves the plunger in/out to open or close the switch? The diagrams in the service manual aren't very detailed.

    Thanks everybody.

The clutch switch is at the clutch lever. It sounds like the same snag as Wolfbyte's. The neutral and clutch wiring is is connected in // , for safe starting, so the diodes prevent the clutch signal from powering the neutral lamp. Just follow Cundalini's instructions and you'll figure it out.
