My first bike was a '86 Honda Shadow 500 (and a YZ125...still not sure which once came first). I learned on a buddy's Honda 50 and later an XR250.

My first bike was a '68 Yamaha 100cc twin two stroke. A street bike. I don't remember the model name. I do remember it topped out at 70 mph when new and at 55 mph when I sold it a couple of years later. BTW, I bought it new in '68 and I was an 18 year old college freshman.

My first was a '83 VT500T Ascot, didn't even know it had liquid cooling til I hunted down the whirling noise (fan) one day. Got it in May 84 and traded it in for an '85 Interceptor the following March...

1984 Honda XL185S. I miss this one. I learned a lot on this, and it showed me what freedom really is!

198? (1985?) Honda CBX250. What a blast! Imported one year only to Canada. Tiny. Too tiny for comfort. Not overly powerful, but could still punch through 100mph (and 50mpg!). Made every city corner feel like a Grand Prix circuit.

1991 Suzuki GS500E (Still have it, although it's in pieces in the basement awaiting a rebuild). What a fun bike. Light and tossable. I will keep it forever, maybe.

1981 Yamaha XV750 Virago. Cheap to buy, run, insure... What more can a guy want? Love that shaft drive. The easiest bike to own.

And finally, the bike I've dreamed about since 1991:
    My "new" 1991 VFR750F

1986 Kawasaki ZL 600, shaft drive turd of a bike. Rode it 40,000 and it blew up the gear box. Got a 1991 Nighthawk and it was a revelation. Can't beat a chain.

I had an 88 FZ 600 for a few months in 07. Taught myself to ride, then bought the greatest bike ever.

Learned on my bro's old KX125 2/s dirt bike. Then got an 89 GSXR-750 banged and bruised back in 93, that was my 1st street bike, wrecked it, then went on to other 2 wheeled devices.

My first bike was a 1964 Honda CB77 305cc Superhawk. It had an electric starter that didn't work, so I got to learn all about kick starting!

Saw a red one at a bike show last year, and it din't look as impressive as the one lodged in my memory! Had a lot of fun with that bike, until I moved on to a CB450....

I got started late in life - I was 25 when I bought my brand new 1991 Honda Hawk GT. Wish I still had her! I then had a 1995 CBR 600 F3, a long layoff for career, marriage, kids, then a re-entry last year with a 2008 EX-500 and now a 2006 VFR 800A. I also have a 1980 GS1000G and my wife has a couple bikes as well. I have loved them all. Our daughters, 7 and 9, started riding with us this year. We want to get them dirt bikes next year if they are ready. Here is the current garage:

My first dirt bike was a Hodaka Super Rat! What a blast! I remember the sparkplug fouled a lot. I always carried a spare plug - and a book of matches to dry out the plug(s). I sold the Hodaka to a moron who ignored my clear instructions and ran it with straight gas. Un-f***ing-believable!

My first road bike was a Honda S-90. The throttle was always pegged on that bike. Always. Mebbee that was 1969 . . . ?

My first ride was a 72 Kawasaki KD90 dual purpose trail bike. It was new at the time but I made sure it didn't look new for long. Not too much power but we had fun. After that there was a string of bikes so numerous I can't remember them all as we had a kawasaki / Honda dealership so I rode everything I could get my hands on from a Can-Am to a Z50 mini trail. I turned 16 in 82 and the full gamut of street bikes were then my primary focus and what an era to be doing this as the 80's machines really ushered in some huge changes that can still be seen in modern machines.

When I think back to the bikes we saw in the 70's and what you see now it is amazing the diversity that is on the street today. In the 70's you didn't see thirty year old machines cruising the roads like you do today and I think that is primarily due to the reliability that really began in the eighties and has steadily improved.

Well that is my little story...

Had a Honda Trail50. Burned it up - literally. Caught fire while I was riding it. Went to a Suzuki TS125, then after selling it, many many years later gor a 95 F3.

Got it from one uncle, who had gotten it from my other uncle who bought her new. She'd been sitting in a garage for allmost a decade under covers and towels and such. Nearly Mint condition when I GOT her, I rode the snot outta that bike. Pretty much put me in the Honda barn by accident (thought I wanted to upgrade to an HD once I leared how to ride, stupid kids) Luckily, I'm a sport biker kinda guy and I found the bestest girl what ever was and I now proudly ride the snot outta my 03 VFR.
