Well, the brake lines didn't cure it. Test rode it today at lunch and within 20 miles the front brake started to apply itself.

My next move will be to replace the master cyl. Anyone have a used one for a NON-ABS Gen 6 ?

No need to replace. A rebuild kit and a good cleaning should remedy the problem.

That was predictable...it'd probably be easier and cheaper to fix the one ya got. The only thing you need that you might not have is a small enough circlip remover and if that little hole is really stubborn clogged, maybe a torch tip drill bit set.

Is that a 14mm or a 1/2? I have a 1/2 MC sitting in the garage if you would need it. Rebuilding the mc is a good alternative too as Eddie says....

I think im gonna stick with a full replacement. My reasoning goes like this.

If i try to rebuild/clean this one and the problem persists im going to second guess myself and the efforts to repair this one. So, id rather replace with "known good part". I dont expect a good used one to cost very much. Im sure i can find one on ebay. And SLOVFR may even have an extra off his '97 that might work.

Sounds good. I've got Farmers Market in SLO with Suzy, so the bike is gonna have to wait at least until she's gone.

UPDATE: Seems to be fixed. I put a used master cylinder on it today from SLOVFR's '97. Just got back from about 30 miles of road test. Everything A.O.K at this point. Its even pretty warm out so i feel pretty confident it was the master cylinder.

Thanks for everyones thoughts on the issue.

MORE INFORMATION - FLIP THE PLUNGER to remedy a locking master cylinder.

If you rebuilt a so-so master cylinder and NOW the front brakes are dragging/locking up after a short while of riding, the fix might be very easy. I just ran into this problem after rebuilding the front brake master cylinder on my 1998 VFR800.

The small 1" plunger that goes between the lever and the mc piston is larger on one side than the other. If you put it in backwards, everything SEEMS to work - you squeeze, brakes engage, you release, brakes disengage. But they don't disengage enough. Within five miles the brakes grab. (If this happens, open/close the bleeder valve as a quick temp-fix to release pressure. Do it as needed to get home.)

When you get home, pull the brake lever off. Pull the little plunger out of the MC. (Leave the MC alone.) Flip over the plunger, reinstall, go for a test ride.

I only wish I realized this before my locked front tire stranded me in the middle of traffic. DO NOT attempt to drag the front tire and move over to the curb. You'll be going slow, but you'll crack the faring on the pavement like I did.
