Ok ?...is it really neccesary to take my bike back to the dealer for that 600 miles service? First it's gonna cost like 200 bucks and I'm most definitly mechanically inclind to do what I have to myself. I bought the extended warrenty on it and the dealer told me that it looks good for warrenty work that I bring it in and that "They do the first service call on it", Should the bike need some kind or warrenty work later on down the road? I never did this to any of my new cars and they still took care of them when something came about.

My '08 VFR has 9k miles on it and it has never been to the dealer for service. I change the oil and filter, I lube the chain and adjust the tension, I visually check everything else. I take the wheels off and bring them in for new tires. If no problems, I'd recommend don't take it in. I did not buy the extended warranty since it is generally a reliable bike. I have had zero problems with mine.

Your warranty is completely valid, whether you do the oil change or not. The 600 mile check also includes a fastener check which you can do yourself without having to worry about what the dealership has to say about what looks good in terms of possible warranty issues.

IMO the 600 miles service is a rip off... all they do basically is change oil. I took my CBR back to the dealer for the 600 mile service and asked them to check something specific and when I got the bike back it had not been done. So, I know that all they did for 2 hours was BS, change oil and take my $$$. I changed the oil for the first time on a bike Monday and it was the VFR. From now on I'm gonna do all my "service" myself or get some one on the forums to help. It certainly won't cost me $200 that I don't really have anyway.

I'm a bit over mileage on my 600 mile check-up right now- it goes in tomorrow. I'm going to have them do it for two reasons- I have a little bit of a clicking noise at low rpms after the engine is warmed up. I want that on the record for warranty purposes in case it turns into something down the road. Also, I'm getting them to put helibars on and its just easier to have them do it. I'll be doing the rest of the oil changes from here on out though- I agree it appears to be a rip-off. Mine dealer is only charging $130 though- $200 seems really exorbitant!

Keep the Receipts for the materials purchased for the oil change and there is nothing they could ever say or do. I use the owner link service record to document the services I do.

$200 is unfortunate. My dealer includes the 600 mile service for free with the purchase of the bike. Yes, most will say that I paid for it ine the original price but I can't complain. I got a new 07 RWB with ABS and factory bags for $9600.00 OTD.

I did just for the warranty. Some dealers may fight problems down the road if it wasn't done by a dealer.

well thanks for the heads up... I'm new to the Honda VFR800......Had a prevoius Suzi Sv650 used, so not really used too a new bike if you know what I mean. Well Honestly I just cancelled my extended warrenty on the bike I think that it's really just a sales pitch and not worthy of the almost 700 bucks for 5 years...gimme a break is the Honda that unrealable? Well spoke to my shop foreman and he's like "it's all B.S...with the extended warrenty crap.. If you can change the oil and filter yourself and lube the chain every so often your good!Oh and then some of coarse but nothing major. Unless your racing the bike and running it like a hooligan your F....ED Other than that then your ok!

I commute 5 days a week and go for a ride just about every Saturday. I put 19,500 on my 06 (RIP) and got my bung hole dug out by one of those "recommended services". $200 for an oil change and a list of crap I already knew was just fine. I would take my bike in every third oil change just to get a second opinion on what should be done. I've put 5k on my new 07 and intend to follow the same routine. Only thing you "have" to do is the 16k valve job and only if it's needed but I highly recommend you look around first. The dealer will run you $800 plus with two or three days of down time but I got mine done for $600 WITH new fork seals, K&N filter, tune up & oil change. Good luck and enjoy the ride.

P.S. You should have got the DARK CANDY APPLE RED. No pictures you see can do that color justice

My new '08 has to go in for it's first 1000 Km oil change this week. The dealer also included it in the price. I will take it in this time but any changes after I will do myself.
Also have the option to purchase a second year of warranty for $500, not sure if that is a good deal.

When is a good time to change over to synthetic oil?

I went to simi after my first oil change and don't really see the need to go to a full synthetic but I guess its a personal preference.

I did my own 600 mi service today. I went with a K&N filter and Rotella T6 5w-40 oil. so far so good. The only down side are those damn clips in the faring and the oil getting on the exhaust. One of the bottom clips just shattered, so I picked 3 up at the dealer for next time.. $2.97 each for a piece of plastic!!! I checked all my bolts, adjusted & lubed the chain, and checked the base idle while i was there. headset was tight. I then listed the service on my Honda owner link site.

I did about 25 miles on it after and all is good.

I've done all of my own service on my '07 and did not buy an extended warranty. I did have a warranty claim in the first year for a bad rear shock and at no time did they ever ask whether the dealer performed routine maintenance or inspections. You can do it yourself and still be covered. Besides, these bikes are bulletproof.
