My first motorcycle was a 1979 Suzuki TS 125 2-stroke. It was street legal and I rode it everywhere. I went trail riding with a co-worker who had a 1984 CR125.(first year for liquid cooling) He left me in the dust of course, but I tried my damndest to keep up. I eventually traded it it for a Suzuki PE 175, blew that up and ended up buying above mentioned CR. Sold the CR, bought an 85 XL 250. I learned a lot of lessons on these small bikes.(cornering, don't drink and ride, etc) and am glad I didn't have a high horsepower machine to learn on.

I learned on a KZ440. My first bike owned a year after riding that for the first time was a KZ1000 - heavier and more powerful but very familiar to what I started on. I'd have to say my first real bike that learned to really ride rather than operate was my Honda 919. That's alot of bigger displacement to start on, but the KZ was great in a straight line and the 919 was a puppy, totally neutral handling, comfortable, no big spikes on the power band. Now I ride a VFR800. So much time on bikes over 600cc's makes me now want a smaller bike to play on having realized that handling has more appeal to me than power. I swear I'm gonna snag an EX500 someday from someone having learned to ride and now wanting bigger power. I guess I've sort of gone backwards. Thank god I've used my head all that time (luck is more likely it:)).

BSA Starlite 75 cc. Top speed was 39 mph if I sat upright, 43 if I laid down on the seat in superman mode. Then a 42-year (!) break until two summers ago when I got a Suzuki SV650. Sweet bike; lovely engine but pogo stick forks and no wind protection so traded it for the 07 VFR.

My first bike - and my all-time favorite bike - was and is Charlotte, my 1986 Honda Interceptor VF500F. I put about 40k miles on her in under 2 years by riding every single day. I'd commute, pleasure ride, go the the store, pleasure ride, visit family, pleasure ride, lather, rinse, repeat.

My plans (if a suitable place can be found) is to be laid to rest on that bike. But that's for another thread...

My first was some sort of a mini bike that I don't remember the name (about 6 years old). It actually had a 2 speed tranny that required you to shift gears, but I don't recall there being a clutch??? This would have been mid 1970's.

Next up was a Kawasaki KE 125 (if memory serves me correctly). Couple years on that, but learned most of my riding on a YZ-125.

First Street Bike was a Kawasaki GPz750 - 1984 or 85. Once again, can't remember shit.

Punisher - I love the dude driving by scoping out your girl.

I started in a '74 Yamaha 125 Enduro. Dad picked up 2 of them and we made one good one. What a heavy bastard that thing was.

My very 1st was a Suzuki step trough 50 (think Honda Cub). After much begging and pleading, my 2nd was a '67 Yamaha 180 twin jet. Rode that thing all over, including a road trip from Jax, Fla to Leesberg VA and back! In those days I thought a "big bike" was anything over 100cc's. That bike was eventually traded for my 1st "real" bike, a brand new 1971 Norton Commando Roadster, black & gold. After a few days with Mr. Commando, I no longer thought of my 180 as a big bike. One thing I do know.......it was on that 180 on a moonlit night, that I knew I would always have a bike, and ride until I could no longer throw a leg over!

First bike I learned to ride was a 1973 Kawasaki 90, only had for about 2 months but that was enough when you're 14. First bike I bought in 1987 was a 1986 Kawasaki KLR 600 Enduro.

My mom was dead nut against motorcycles of any kind. (She just turned 80 this year and she still thinks it is a phase I am going through.) Bikes were anti social and the people that rode them were obviously destined for poverty and early graves. This made me want one all the more. I purchase an SL 125 Honda from Carl Jannon by empting out the entire content of my college saving account, the princely sum of $90. The bike was crap, with a bent valve and cracked piston. It was the only way I was allowed to keep it. It was a non runner. Through much toil, and trial and error, I got it running and that bike was my friend all through high school. My first real street bike was a Triumph TR25 that I pushed further than I rode. It had a total loss electrical system. I could ride until it started to sputter and then I would ride as fast as possible back to the house.
