Was cruising Fleabay and noticed some really nice looking mufflers for automobiles, chrome, aluminum, CF, SS that could be easily adapted to fit on my vfr. I have a full 2 Bros exhaust system that is a tad loud for the neighborhood (but perfect in the twistys).

What's the difference between a $50 car muffler and a $300-$500 bike muffler? The ability to swap mufflers depending on where I'm riding that day would be a real advantage ticket wise, and doing it on the cheap would make it even better (I am Scottish).

    Has anybody done this?

How come there's never enough time to do it right, but always enough time to do it over?

I would advise against this as it could cause software issues with the ECU and potentially change your headlight aim, not to mention the effect on tire pressures. :D

Yeah, why not. Aftermarket bike exhausts are a scam anyhow, with what I would guess to be 200-500% profit margins. Pisses me off but most buy for the name rather than performance in my neck of the woods. If I found a car (automoblile / gas engine) exhaust that fit and did the job with less restriction than stock I'd do it in a heartbeat. Yankee ingenuity.

    I searched for this subject before I posted...sorry if it's a rehash.

It just amazes me what these muffler retailers are asking for (in my case) a 22" aluminum tube full of fiberglass or stainless steel wool with their name on it. Saw some really nice looking cans for <$50 advertised and just wondered if there was some kind of mysterious difference between bike and cage mufflers. Might be fun to try on an old school Cherry bomb from my long ago racing days...ahhhh the smell of leaded gasoline...

All those who believe in psychokinesis raise my hand.

    How would it do that??

I'm fairly sure that a 15 stone (210 lb) pillion would have more effect?

Please share what you might find that could be suitable as a can on the bike. I'd be interested to see what you come across and if you're successful in "stickin it to the man".

Got a Yoshimura can on my 91. The bike rolled off the dealers floor with it on there. I had them delete the wholesale price for the stock can from the "final" sales price of the bike. BTW if ya haven't signed the bottom line of they don't have your bucks in any form in thier hot hands, no matter what they tell you. you are still in charge of the transaction. The Yosh can at the time was $260.00 and change.

There seems a propensity to gab about the high end stuff on this and similar forums. Like who really needs a full unobtanium exhaust system costing a couple of thou on a bike designed for touring and some spirited riding. IMO, those who are full of shit or have more money than brains.

There more than just a couple of aftermarket outfits that make exhaust cans for bikes. Try one of the really big onlike sellers like Dennis Kirk. These outfits have stuff that is not on the current website too. You need to ask to find out. They have folks who answer similar questions who are more than happy to look.

This car muffler thing may be well worth exploring. Painted my Yosh can and the extension to the header collector almost three years ago with a paint used for barbeques. Still looks good and would work on a car muffler too.

For those who will be wanting some flat pink, you are on your own.

Will do...Been looking at Cherry Bombs ($27+shipping) just to see what happens. This might be fun!

I used the flat black BBQ paint on my vf500 with great results.

One of the guys I ride with put a Cherry Bomb on his 1200 Bandit, he painted it black and it looks and sounds great, but a bit loud if you're right behind him and he gets on it.

could someone post a cherry bomb? I keep envisioning a kind of firework. I don't remember an exhaust called cherry bomb. I had glasspacks but that's about it for aftermarket exhaust that I remember...

Cherry Bomb = Glass pack. Cherry Bomb is a brand name of a glass pack.
