How many of you have done it? (Knee drag on a VFR)

    Hi guys just wondering how many of you have been able to drag your knees around a turn on a vfr? Its something I'm gunning for and hope to be able to do when I'm ready for it but I'm not rushing it. But yeah I'm smiling thinking one day I will!

    I have on the track quite a bit but just a couple times on big sweepers on the road. I have long legs and ride out of the seat a little bit, though. My knee sliders safely last years and years... Now before I upgraded my suspension, I actually dragged hard parts quite a few times. The peg feelers, the center stand, and even the mid pipe once. That was unnerving. Now that I have better shocks and get off the seat, I very very rarely ever hear any scraping (at least until I crash).

    It's very easy to do. The VFR is a very forgiving bike to ride. What it basically boils down to is how much do you trust yourself? I would also like to point out that knee dragging on the street isn't very smart. You're much better served backing it down a notch or three. To paraphrase from the MSF, complete all your braking BEFORE the turn (slow to a suitable entry speed), look thru the turn (look where you want to go & trust me, you WILL end up there), lean into the turn (if you use body positioning, that's up to you) & roll onto the gas at the apex. It is really that easy: slow, look, lean & roll.

    Remember this little saying, it is NEVER, EVER wrong: It is better to go into a corner slow & come out fast instead of going into the corner fast & not come out at all.

    I'm sure everyone else will say the same, but DO NOT drag your freaking knee unless you have a slider of some sort on it.

    Yep the VFR is very capable in pretty much all generations from what I've experienced. The third gen bikes are really hurting for ground clearance so you need to hang waaaay off when riding at the track but they can still surprise many. The fifth gen is much better but still runs out of clearance and benefits from raising the rear ride height but you still grind off the rear brake pedal and shifter if your riding hard. You need to take the feelers off the pegs and toss them as they really limit cornering clearance. I would burn up a set of sliders in one day on the 3rd gen but the fifth was better and so was I so they last a bit longer. There are a few shots in my gallery if you're interested.

    Two points of advice though,

    1. Take an advanced riding school if you haven't already before you attempt to use this technique
    2. Don't ride this hard on the street as it leaves you no margin for the unexpected

    I haven't done it and have no desire at this point in time. Instead, I will say that I hope to do track days sometimes.
