I am going to pick up a Gen 2 VFR700F on the first and its 800 miles away. So my question is " Should I ride it home or trailer it or both?"

I have owned other motorcycles before but this is my first rocket and am not sure what the ride is going to be like beside fast.

I'd like to say ride it, but I don't know who had it and how well they took care of it. If you are able to give it a a good once over before leaving, you should be able to do it, but what if it needs tires, oil change, spark plugs, chain and sprockets, etc? Can you go to the person's house and do all that? That's a 2 day trip. Do you have a stopping point between 400-500 mile mark? I'd go 500 the first day if you can handle it that way when you get on the bike sore you know you are more than half way. It's a pretty long haul for an unknown entity. After you have had the bike a while and you know it well, it's no big deal to do 800 miles on a VFR of almost any year, but it's sketchy on a new-used one of someone else.

You're picking up a rocket? Seems to me like 800 miles should be nothing then!

Sorry dude, I can't take anyone seriously that uses that term.

Trailer it. Too risky. You don't know the treatment of the bike over the years. If it was 100 miles, maybe, but 800 is a long ways for a 20+ year old bike.

+1 with the trailer, to much to go wrong without looking it over from head to toe, it is 24 years old.

Another +1 for the trailer. You can't go 200 miles and then decide you want it on a trailer anyhow.

OK so it decided that I am going to trailer it home. Thanks everyone for your input on this I haven't been on a bike in 5 years and am just really stoked to get back in the saddle.

Here's my other question for you " It is a street fighter right know but he has all the fairings for it how hard is it to put it back together and what hardware will I need to fasten them back on? "

That really depends on what he has done to make it a streetfighter. If he just took off the lower fairings, then easy, but if he modified it more so, then it is going to be more difficult. I would ask him in detail what he did and how to put it back together stock.

A pic of what you have and the condition of the head light and upper stay are important. The head light and stay are the most important part of getting the plastic back on straight.

From what I learned from the guy is that it doesn't have any mods done to it and that he has most of the plastic for it. He also stated that someone did a crappy job of spray painting it black which is easy to fix i hope. He also said that it passes all of NJ's emission laws and is up to date on all maintenance. I will post a pick of it as soon as I can and see what you guys/gals think and which direction I should go. Like I said before I was a cruiser guy and this is a whole new world for me..

And now you are part of VFRWorld. Welcome BTW. Once you have been here, we own your soul. I agree that you should trailer your prize until you have ahd a good opportunity to give the steed a good going over and test rides closer to home. If for some reason it gives up the ghost, you are only a few miles from home adn not several hundred.

Thank you Mr. Prime Minister.. But on a real note, I am gald that I went to this site and not some of the other sport bike forums, this one seems to be a more friendly and not just some hot heads showing off how small there junk really is by busting some one down about what they ride or who they have tagged over the years. In just a couple of days I have gotten some of the best advice from folks that know this bike by ready through the other forums and mine. Ok enough with the mushy stuff!!!

I am going to change the tires out on it but from what I've heard wider is better on the back or should I stick with the 130-80-18? And what do you folks think about the Dunlop GT501 series of tires?

Original colors. No question. It won't be easy, but it's worth it. Only color as good as RWB it BWR!
