Last questions guys (maybe...)! For those of you who have been following the thrilling "starting problems" and "fuel tank help" threads, thanks very much for all your help. As it stands, I think I need a new battery, and probably a new Reg/Rec. I would love to get the bike running so that I could run some fuel stabilizer through the whole system and have it ready for next season....but, to accomplish that, I would need to get the new battery now, which would then sit for a 3 or 4 months in a cold warehouse, not to mention the chance that I'd get the battery and R/R and it still might not start.

So, better to drain the tank and carbs and wait for spring, or better to get the battery and R/R and get it running now, regardless of the battery?

Final question: Could the R/R really cause the bike to not start, even though it cranks strong, headlight works, etc? I don't understand!!!!

I would go ahead and get it going so you can figure out if there is anything else before next season. you can always put it on a trickle charger. As for the R/R causing it not to run, I'm not sure. I had one go out years ago, but I can't remember exactly. It seems like it ran for a while then died after the battery ran down, but it has been so long I'm not positive.

I'm with REG, I would get it running now. If not then you know
your going to have to prolly pull off the carbs and have them
cleaned along with fixing what is wrong now. I would get a battery
and give her a go. If that doesn't then shoot for the R/R, to
be safe have your fuel additive on hand if it does start and run
for a bit then dies. Then you know to look at the R/R, does it have
spark and just don't catch to crank or is it like you hit the on/off
    kill switch?

It turns over fine...lights work, horn works, etc...that's what makes it so confusing. I'm thinking of spending the money for a new R/R either way, if only for peace of mind...after all, it did smoke and get real hot after I got it running for a few minutes, which makes me think it must have previously gotten overloaded somehow. It's just strange, because it seems like I corrected the fuel problem by draining tank, carbs, fresh gas, etc. and then the next day I got nothing...which at first made me think, yes, it was a fuel problem, because after you did all that stuff it ran...but then it makes me think no, it's not a fuel problem, because what changed in the fuel system to make it not start the next day? Gas didn't change, temp didn't change, etc, etc.

any opinions on the R/R from electrosport? Saw some positive reviews on another site.

I remember someone on here having a problem using an aftermarket R/R and their opinion on it was just to spend the extra few bucks to get the upgraded honda R/R. It's what's on my bike. It's what SLOav8r put on his recently, and probably most any of us who have a new one went that route. No probs on mine since the previous owner put it on. This is one part where I would go with the Honda piece. But I'm sure there are others who have gone aftermarket with no probs. I just hate elctrical issues.
