I have a 2004 vfr with 27,000 miles. Runs great. Daily driver. But about two weeks ago. I was cruising at 4500-5000 rpm down the freeway for awhile, and all of a sudden the bike had a loss of power and started cutting out, like it was running on two cyclinders. The FI light never came on, and the cutting out lasted for about 30 seconds. I did stop for a moment, it still idled, but very rough at about 800 rpm. Then just went away and never did it again. Until yesterday, I was cruising home from work, about 5000 rpm, and it started sputtering again. I gave it more throttle and could get it to maintain speed, about 30 seconds later goes away, and ran fine the rest of the way home. Once again, no FI light, and the light does work. Cause it momentarly goes on when first turning on the bike. Both times the bike engine was at
170-180 degrees. Seems wierd it would be so random and I do the same drive daily, cruising at the same rpm's. SO the situation that it happens in, is repeated every day. Has anyone had a simular experience? The previous owner said he had no issues ever with the bike and ran fine. I bought the bike with 24,000 miles. The bike is bone stock, with a K&N air filter. I ran a can of fuel system cleaner after the first time it was cutting out. Thanks everyone

Did you ever get this fixed? I'm curious, I just bought one and had the same issue, but mine only has 850 miles. Did you take it to the dealer have them look at it, what did they say?

I'd be interested in the results as well! I just had my first problem with the bike in the year and a half that I've owned it. I have an 04 with staintune power commander. Never had any problems until this afternoon. I have run 2 or 3 tanks full of gas in the bike since I took it out of storage for the spring. I started the bike up to go and it didn't want to start up. The FI light came on like normal. It started up and had a couple of very small backfires. It was down to the last bar of fuel, so i took it to the gas station and filled it up hoping that maybe it was just some bad gas. On the way there it backfired a couple of times (very small still) I filled up and drove about 10 miles with no change. The exhaust note sounds like a v-twin and it doesn't have ANY power. It idles a little rough at about 1000 rpms (like a v-twin). I think if it was a gas problem it would have worked itself out already. Not sure where to start, but I'm doing some research on the boards here to see what I can find.

Do any of the bikes in question have power commanders on them? If so, temporarily disconnect them and see if the bike runs better.

Could be a dirty fuel filter, loose throttle cable. Check your plugs! Spark plug condition tells a good story as to what's going on. The only other thing that comes to mind might be the t-chain tensioner, but that might involve vibrations.
